Christmas Could Come Early

According to Vancouver Canucks’ General Manager Mike Gillis, Mats Sundin will have his decision by Thursday.

All I can say is, and I think the rest of the hockey world will agree with me, it’s about time. Since last season ended, all anyone could talk about was “What is Mats Sundin going to do?” “Is he going to retire?” “Is he going to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs?” “Is he going to be a Montreal Canadien, Vancouver Canuck, Philadelphia Flyer, New York Ranger, etc.?” “Will he really just be a rent-a-player?”

That question will finally be answered on Thursday and right now, it’s tough to say what he is going to decide.

During the free-agent season, the Canucks jumped on the ball first and offered him a two-year deal worth $20 million. However, this past weekend, the Blueshirts began their recruiting effort and right now, appear to be the front runners.

It’s clear that neither of these teams could go wrong by signing the Big Swede. The big question for the Rangers is who would they dump/trade in order to sign Mats. If the Canucks are able to get him, they won’t have to do much manuvering financially because they have been there since day one and have been waiting to hear his decision before making any other moves.

So what is it going to be folks? Are the Canucks going to add a Sundin to the Sedin’s (Daniel and Henrik) or are the Blueshirts are going to add a Swede to complement the likes of Markus Naslund, Henrik Lundqvist and Fredrik Sjostrom?

Actually, I think the real hockey world, i.e., the fans, quit caring about two months ago. At this point, I don’t know anyone who gives a rat’s ass who Moonbeam signs with. And here’s my prediction...whoever this prima donna signs with gets sent packing in the first round!

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
