Did the Rangers get lucky?

Since I wasn’t around much this weekend, I wanted to get your thoughts on the retirement of New York Rangers’ forward Markus Naslund.

This was first reported by Larry Brooks of the NY Post. Naslund’s time on Broadway wasn’t the greatest as he looked every bit his 35 years of age. As Brooks reports, Naslund was due $4 million in salary next season.

Who do you folks think would be a good replacement for Naslund?

I don’t think this will be used as “replacement” cash but more as extra breathing room given our salary cap issues.  This will def help when trying to resign Dubinsky and Callahan which are musts for the Rangers.  Beyond that… I’m not sure what type of magic Sather has up his sleeve.  I’d love to see Grachev, Anisimov, Sanguinetti and maybe P.A. Paranteua up from Hartford for next year.  We have to start playing our youth rather than let our youth sit there in the AHL for so long that they cannot properly develop.  Get rid of the un-hungry vets and pave way for the kids.  It’s the only way to survive the NHL these days.

We do need someone.. Who? I’m not sure. I’m not sure there is anyone this year. If I know Glen Sather, he’s going to be talking to the Marian Gaborik camp. That’s almost a given. But do you take a risk on a guy who struggles with injuries and a big salary? I don’t think you can. But that’s my take. Maybe Glen calls up his old buddy Jaromir Jagr. Maybe not.

Anisimov is ready as far as I’m concerned. Sanguinetti may be a bit of a liability still defensively even though he has tremendous upside potentially.  Grachev looks good right now, but is he NHL ready right now? Probably not. Parenteau I don’t think will have much success at the NHL level… But I could be wrong.

Push to get rid of Redden’s salary one way or another. Free up that space and go from there.

Let’s not make any rash decisions here........

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
