Down on Captain Drury

When the New York Rangers’ signed Chris Drury as a free agent back in the summer of 2007, the organization and its general manager Glen Sather must have thought the club was getting a different player.

In his four seasons as a Blueshirt, it is easy to say that Drury has been a disappointment. He has not contributed offensively as much as the organization thought he would and for the money the team is paying him, that is simply unacceptable.

At the same time, Drury has been a solid penalty killer and is easily the best face-off man the Blueshirts have. If the Rangers are able to clinch a playoff spot this season, those skills will be a terrific thing to have.

With that said however, one has to wonder what exactly Drury has done for the Rangers this season. On paper, Drury has just four assists in 21 games, Yes folks, you read that right?

I am not sure whether he is snake bitten or whether he is losing the skills that made him so successful in the past. Watching him this season, he has had some trouble handling the puck and more importantly, putting the puck on net as he has taken only 22 shots.

What do you folks think the team captain has to do to prove his worth? Does he need to produce more? Does he need to deliver a Stanley Cup?

What are your thoughts?

Yikes, I didn’t even realize that was the case.

I think intangibles are really important to a hockey team. Chris has a reputation around the league for being a great leader, and I have absolutely no doubt its warranted. But four assists? That’s simply inexcusable.
