Flyers Dominate Blueshirts

I have to say that I did not see this coming.

Last game at MSG before 2010, a chance to pick up two big points in front of the home crowd and improve the team’s home record and an opportunity to build a new winning streak - all blown to smitheriens as the Blueshirts lost to the Philadelphia Flyers last night by a score of 6-0.

Basically put, the team did not show up last night. They gave the Flyers ample scoring opportunities, left guys all alone in front of both goaltender Henrik Lundqvist (pulled after the first period) and Chad Johnson and made the game quite easy for Flyers’ netminder Michael Leighton.

This is not the kind of effort that will win you hockey games let alone allow you to clinch a playoff spot in the ever tight Eastern Conference. It is this kind of effort that should make both head coach John Tortorella and general manager Glen Sather question their players’ heart, effort and whether or not they actually belong with the team.

Torts will definitely look and talk with the players but it’s safe to assume that Sather will stay the course and not make a move. The goaltenders need to be left out of the problems but players like Wade Redden, Michal Rozsival, Chris Drury, Donald Brashear and a few others need to get their acts together or 2010 will bring in much of the same.

Tonight, the Blueshirts are in Raleigh to take on the Carolina Hurricanes, a team that they beat back on Monday, December 21. However, we all know that means nothing as the Blueshirts have lost plenty of games to teams that they should beat.

One thing’s for sure, a great way to go into 2010 would be with a win by playing smart hockey and by having everyone deliver a consistent effort.

Note: Just wanted to let you folks know that my computer had the blue screen of death yesterday and as such, I am using my apartment business center’s computers. I am probably going to have to get my cpu fixed but will do my best to blog every other day or something like that.
