Gilroy Stepping Up for the Blueshirts

In the last week or so, there has been a noticeable difference in New York Rangers’ defenseman Matt Gilroy’s game.
Gilroy has appeared to be more confident, poised, willing to jump into the play, make smart plays in the defensive zone and more importantly, a steady presence on the club’s blue line.
According to Rangers’ web site beat writer Jim Cerny, Rangers’ head coach John Tortorella went as far to say that Gilroy was the club’s “sixth defenseman”:
Great stuff from Boyle and Gilroy…by the way Torts called Gilroy “one of our six (defensemen) right now”...hmmmmm…
With defenseman Michael Del Zotto relegated to being a healthy scratch, this could not come at a better time for the Blueshirts. It is obvious that Gilroy has a lot of offensive ability considering that he was a forward for many years prior to becoming a defenseman.
With that said, his play in his own zone has really improved over the last week, which is exactly what Tortorella wants to see.
Let’s see how long Gilroy can keep it up now.
