From Dan Rosen at NHL.com:
The Rangers summoned for Avery on Monday because, as Tortorella said, Mike Rupp’s nagging knee injury has turned into a long-term concern. Avery, who had 1 goal and seven penalty minutes in two games with the Whale, could immediately move into a fourth-line role if Tortorella elects to play him.
“This is the right decision,” Tortorella said Monday prior to the Rangers 5-2 win over San Jose. “It’s the right hockey decision now and it was the right hockey decision when we sent Sean down. That’s where it’s at.”
Tortorella stopped short of saying he would play Avery on Thursday, especially after the way the Rangers responded to win Monday’s game.
