Interest in Redden? (Not an April Fool’s Joke)

From the Toronto Globe & Mail via at Blueshirt Banter:

Just found this update on the Toronto Globe and Mail, here are the highlights of particular interest to us:

There is belief the Maple Leafs have been zeroing in on New York Rangers defenceman Wade Redden and forward Peter Schaefer of the Boston Bruins.

Schaefer, 31, was buried in the minors by the Bruins last season because of salary cap concerns. He has one more year on his contract at $2.3-million (U.S.). Redden, 32, was signed to a six-year, $39-million unrestricted free-agent deal last summer, and the Rangers would not be averse to moving him.

The Leafs have plenty of salary cap room – $10-million to $13-million depending on the contract given to restricted free-agent forward Mikhail Grabovski – to accommodate both players.

But if the Leafs have interest in Redden, it means Burke must be serious about trading away either Tomas Kaberle or Pavel Kubina. The two veteran defenceman have no-trade contracts, but a window in which they can be traded opens when the draft commences on Friday.

“I’m going [to Montreal] to listen to offers,” said Leafs GM Brian Burke.

Click here for more. I’m certainly all for whatever helps the Rangers demote/get rid of Redden.

The thing is, I think the Rangers might actually have to give something up just to get rid of Redden… which isn’t really a bad idea.

If they said to Toronto ‘Here, take Redden and we’ll throw in a #3’, I think the Leafs have to at least listen.

Any way you look at it, Redden’s contract is a cap-killer… so if you are lucky enough to find an idiot GM that focuses more on being dirty than on being good, well, you have to take advantage of that.

Well, Toronto has yet to replace the inept Bryan McCabe. Redden would be a perfect replacement.

Darren Dreger refuted this via text to Greg Brady on AM640, but I believe the idea behind it was that NY would be throwing in at least a 1st RD pick and a prospect. Burke got a #4 for 500K, so you would figure the return for $30M+ would start at a 1st and go from there.
