From David Kolb at MaxHockey.com:
The Biron signing tells you nothing about Dipietro’s current or future status, but the decision to bring Biron in after already signing Dwayne Roloson on July 1 simply reflects DiPietro’s track record.
What Islander fans should really take from this signing is that their g.m., Garth Snow both runs the team, and is doing a heck-of-a job doing it.With $1.4 million dollars he made a bold statement.
No longer are the Islanders going to hope their franchise player can carry them, nor will they hold out hope for DiPietro to be a team leader. As a matter of fact, the Isles and fans alike can now enter the 2009-2010 season not even thinking about the whereabouts of the wandering netminder. I mean for God’s sake, a Roloson-Biron tandem is more than adequate for not only cellar dwellers, but for a top quality NHL team as well.
Click here for more on Rick DiPietro and the New York Islanders. It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out come October.

About Goal Line Report
The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.
I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.

Bold statement? Nah...the Islanders are following the same strategy that is guaranteed to throw them into an abyss. Tavares isn’t Jesus Crosby and he won’t save the franchise from absolute embarrassment; replacing two serviceable goaltenders who were cheaper (Danis and MacDonald; you could count Dubliewicz as well) with older goaltenders with similar GAAs won’t make a difference when you give up 40 shots a night. Rolo and Biron had .915 save percentages on better defensive teams so the proof may be in the pudding next year; I’d suggest Roloson’s GAA to be close to MacDonalds from last year (a horrid .901). Essentially the Islanders’ best producing player was DEFENSEMAN Mark Streit, no one on the team had over 20 goals. With a supporting cast the offensive equivalent of either Florida or Phoenix with no defensive responsibility means it’s going to be a continually depressing time for the organization which may or may not actually “break” Tavares.
