Lundqvist Shines in Blueshirts Win over the Devils

The “King” returned to his throne last night as the New York Rangers beat the Devils 4-1 last night at Madison Square Garden.

Henrik Lundqvist was brilliant in making 41 saves and showed the team’s fans and the rest of the league that when he is on, he is one of the best netminders in the National Hockey League.

What was also nice for Lundqvist was that his team managed to beat Devils’ netminder Martin Brodeur three times as the Blueshirts got goals from Marian Gaborik, Ryan Callahan and Chris Drury. The three goals came in a span of 2:39 and for Lundqvist, it was really refreshing as he told the team’s Web site the following:

“It was big for us to score those goals that quickly,” said Lundqvist. “It changed the game.”

“It’s a relief to get a win and play a solid game,” said Lundqvist, who had not earned a victory since an 8-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 19. “It had been on my mind a little bit. I was working hard, but maybe too hard.”

Marian Gaborik, who now has 35 goals, said the following about the team’s goaltender, who frustrated the Devs’ all night long:

“Henrik was great today,” said Gaborik. “He was the difference.”

When the Bloueshirts have a goaltender like they do, they are usually going to be in every hockey game. It’s just a matter of what they can do to support him because you know that Lundqvist will give the team close to his best effort game in and game out. John Tortorella agress with my sentiments as he told the team’s Web site the following:

“He’s one of the best competitors I’ve ever seen,” Tortorella said of Lundqvist. “It was a big game for him, and had to be big for his self-confidence.”

With the win, Lundqvist helped place the team tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with the Philadelphia Flyers, who each have 59 points.

The Blueshirts will have a chance to pick up a big two points in their next game, which is on Wednesday night against the Nashville Predators. If Lundqvist starts (which we all know he will) and plays the way he did last night, picking up two points is more than reachable.

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
