Delving deeper into the new Ryan Callahan contract that he received from the New York Rangers earlier this afternoon, it was simply a deal that the Blueshirts had to make.
It is quite clear that Callahan wants to be a Ranger for the majority of his career, much like Brandon Dubinskt wants to be as well. Callahan said the following earlier today:
“We were both working out three-, four- and five-year deals and I think we agreed the numbers worked for a three-year deal,” Callahan told The Record. “We couldn’t come to a conclusion on a longer deal.
“(But) I’m thrilled to be back for three years. I love playing for the Rangers. I’m excited to be back and to have this behind me and concentrate on the season. I was hoping it would get done but you never really know how it’s going to go in these negotiations. I definitely didn’t want to go to arbitration and only go on a one-year deal. I’m really happy it didn’t have to come to that.”
With the three-year deal signed, now it is time to name Callahan the next team captain. While not exactly a long-term contract, the deal does show that Callahan is committed to the Blueshirts and helping this team into the future.
Secondly, it shows that while he will be receiving a lot of money, that money was not at the top of his brain when signing this deal. Callahan is going to be a great offensive player in the NHL and will be one that can probably put up between 60-70 points. Basically put, the Rangers got him at the right price and Callahan was more than willing to sign the deal.
Lastly, this is his team. It is time for him to be the symbol of the Blueshirts and to put this team on his shoulders and show them how it is done.
