More Positives Than Negatives

Last night’s New York Rangers vs. Washington Capitals game was a barn burner, eh?
The Blueshirts were able to put five past Capitals’ netminder Jose Theodore and yet, still came away with a 6-5 loss.
This was a game where offensively, the Blueshirts were clicking. They scored four power play goals, they put pucks to the net, went to the dirty areas to score and looked confident, something Ranger fans have not seen in the past couple of months.
This is a game that the team should definitely be able to build off of going into another tough tilt tomorrow night, this time against Illya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils. It will be interesting to see what kind of offensive dynamic Kovalchuk brings to the Devils. It certainly will not make them any easier to play against.
Back to last night’s game, it was nice to see Vinny Prospal look like his old self, posting four points (2 goals, 2 assists). The team also got solid performances from Marian Gaborik (2 assists), newcomer Olli Jokinen (1 goal, 1 assist), and Ryan Callahan 1 goal, 1 assist). That’s a lot of contributions from a team that usually struggles offensively so it was definitely a welcome change.
Blueshirt netminder Henrik Lundqvist, on the other hand, had a rough night, allowing six goals on 32 shots. He did not look particularly comfortable in between the pipes, which is understandable given the high-octane offense he was facing in the Capitals. However, I’m sure there were some goals that he would like back as again, the Blueshirts could have picked up two points in this game.
Again, there are a lot of positives that the team can take from this game but they cannot afford to rest on their laurels with the Devils in town tomorrow night.
We’ll see what the team’s offense brings against the somewhat new-look Devils.
