Never Say Die

It was just four weekends ago that the New York Rangers were down 2-0 in third period and managed to come back and win the game 3-2 in a shootout over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It was deja vu all over again tonight as the Rangers were down 2-0 in the third to the Boston Bruins, only to tie the game in the third period with 53 seconds to go and win it in a shootout thanks to a goal from captain Chris Drury.

Welcome to the new NHL folks.

It used to be that when a team got the lead, they would hook and interfere their way to a victory. However, with the new rules in place, teams can no longer do that and you see outcomes such as tonight.

The Bruins were 6:05 away from shutting out the Rangers, only to see their two goal lead snapped by Nigel Dawes (off a great feed from Lauri Korpikoski) and Markus Naslund. Once the team got into overtime, they knew they had a chance to come out of the game with two points.

“Boston came in as the hottest team in the league,” Rangers head coach Tom Renney told the team’s website after the victory. “But I think we also showed why we have the record we have, and why we deserve the respect we are getting from around the league.”

In the shootout, Dawes, Fredrik Sjostrom and Nikolai Zherdev were all stopped but then, the captain finally came through and put the team up 1-0, allowing the team’s goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to stop the final shot to give his team the victory.

It was the team’s second straight victory and they will look to keep piling up the points when they take on the Ottawa Senators on Monday night at Madison Square Garden. Hopefully, the Blueshirts won’t look too much into the fact that the Sens’ are coming off back-to-back losses to the New York Islanders.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this game so feel free to comment away!

i watched the game… im a big lundqvist fan.. but as good as he played, tim thomas played amazing… he deserves some recognition around the league…
i watch a lot of rangers’ hockey and ive seen rozsival play bad.. but tonight was brutal.. he mishandled a few at the beginning of the game, which is fine.. but in the 3rd when fans started getting on him, he lost his composure and couldnt handle anything
but great win for the rangers… stole a point away from the bruins… were outplayed in the 2nd and 3rd and found a way to win.... i was looking for chara’s number to be called in the shootout, but glad it wasn’t

The Bruins controlled this game from start to finish. The refs did their best to keep the Rangers in it. The Rags got lucky to tie it with 50 seconds left. In the end a shootout loss means nothing to me. You can’t win a Cup in a shootout.

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
