Well, finally some rumblings in Rangerland, huh? First, Mark Messier is coming back to the Blueshirts as a special assistant to Glen Sather where he will learn the business and see what it takes to run a hockey team. Hmmm, should Mark go somewhere else for that?
Secondly, the team signed Vinny Prospal. He played for Rangers’ head coach John Tortorella two seasons ago with the Tampa Bay Lightning and posted 80 points. He’s a guy that will pick up a bunch of assists and be good for the team’s non-existent power play.
What I am wondering is what is going on with Brandon Dubinsky. For awhile, it seemed the team was intent on having Dubinsky as the No.1 center but with the signing of Prospal, who’s both a winger and centerman, one has to wonder what the team’s plan for Dubinsky is.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post had the following to say about Dubinsky:
The plan at the moment is to give Dubinsky the opportunity to claim the center position on the first line that will feature Marian Gaborik on the right and either Sean Avery or Christopher Higgins on the left. But if Dubinsky cannot handle the assignment, Prospal, who is strong on the puck, probably would get the call.
Brooks also went onto say:
Dubinsky, a Group II free agent, and the Rangers have been in contract talks for a number of weeks, but it now seems as if the parties are not going to reach an agreement on a multi-year contract. Unless Dubinsky can attract an offer sheet on which the Blueshirts would have the right of first refusal, it appears as if he will play the season on his one-year qualifying offer of $698,500.
We’ll see what happens on that front. For more on Rangers’ news, notes and opinions, check out the following links:

I’m with you on that one, I’m questioning Dubinsky’s future as well. I hope they are able to lock up Dubinsky, the kid has so much talent if he finds the confidence in his game and learns to play the same every game… Watch out.
