Not Enough

The New York Rangers’ offense is clearly struggling, as the 4-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks last night at GM Place would indicate.

They’re getting the pucks to the net but not many of them are of the quality scoring chance variety. Last night, Rangers’ star Marian Gaborik was not given much room to operate as Canuck players got in his way to block shots, check him out of position and throw him off his game.

As has been this case thus far in the early going, if the opponent can shutdown Gaborik, they’ll have a pretty good chance of beating the Blueshirts. If the Rangers want to get back to playing consistently good hockey, this will have to change in a hurry.

On a positive note, Christopher Higgins scored his first goal as a Ranger off a nice feed from Brandon Dubinsky. Head coach John Tortorella is certainly giving Higgins a lot of minutes (over 20 minutes of ice time last night) to get it going so hopefully, last night’s goal will spark some more offense out of him.

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist also had a solid night between the pipes making 26 saves. However, costly mistakes made by the team in front of him caught up with him in the loss.

According to Jim Cerny of NewYorkRangers.com Torts’ had the following to say after last night’s loss:

“We just can’t make the mistakes we made once we tied the game up 1-1,” said Rangers head coach John Tortorella. “I believe we’ll get our offense going, but I’m more concerned with our situational play.”

This was a game that the Rangers definitely could have won but they’ll have to take what they learned from this game and implement it against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night at Rexall Place.
