The title explains everything about the New York Rangers 6-4 loss to the New York Islanders yesterday afternoon at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The team’s defense was sloppy, the team took undisciplined penalties at crucial points in the game and lastly, they gave away two points that they should have had.
Yes, it’s early on in the season and there is plenty of time to work on these kinds of mistakes but the fact they happened against their rivals in inexcusable.
What’s also inexcusable was the play of the team’s defense. Michael Del Zotto had a tough game and Steve Eminger was often out of position to make the necessary defensive plays to help the team.
Of course, you can’t talk about this game and not mention the Sean Avery and James Wisniewski incident. Nicholas Montemagno of The Rangers Tribune gave his thoughts:
Lastly, I wanted to quickly talk about the incident between Sean Avery and Islander defenseman James Wisniewski. Although I was in attendance at the Coliseum this afternoon, I did not see the actual play develop. But thankfully for some loyal twitter followers, I was sent a video of Wisniewski’s obscene gesture. Obviously it is not something you should be doing at a professional level, but also I doubt the league comes down too hard on him if they happen to take any action at all. If Avery was the one doing it, however……
Looking at the positives, the team has now scored 10 goals in two games and not even Marian Gaborik or Alex Frolov have popped one in yet. For a team that struggled for offense last season, this is definitely a good sign, even though yesterday’s offensive output came against the Isles.
What Ranger fans need to learn is that they cannot get too down or too excited this early on in the season. If you remember correctly, the team got off to blazing starts in 2008-09 and 2009-10, only to struggle in the middle of the season and then barely make the playoffs one season and miss them entirely the following season.
With that said, let’s all take a breath and see how everything plays out with this year’s version of the Blueshirts.
