Puck Daddy’s Thoughts on Team Canada’s Omissions

From Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy:

As this point, your heart just goes out to Steven Stamkos(notes). The No. 1 overall pick in 2008 for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the kid battled through absurd expectations placed on him through offseason marketing—and his own struggles—in a season that saw him earn just three third-place sympathy votes for the Calder.

But he played better as the year wore on, and played very well for Team Canada in the 2009 world championships. Olympic hockey analyst Pierre McGuire thought his international experience might be enough to earn Stamkos a roster spot for Team Canada in the 2010 Winter Games.

Click here for more. I for one am shocked that New York Rangers’ defenseman Wade Redden was not asked (just kidding obviously)!

Crosby got snubbed four years ago in a similar situation. Team Canada is more comfortable selecting players with a track record. I’m sure Stamkos will be there next time around assuming he continues to progress at his current rate.

I’m kind of surprised that Jordan Staal was invited. Good for him though. Either it means he made an impression on guys like Babcock and Yzerman during the playoffs, or that Canadians like playing the Staal Brother Drinking Game: Olympics Edition.

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
