Rangers Get Lucky - Live to Fight Another Day

If the Rangers do make the playoffs this season, it will not be so much because of Henrik Lundqvist, as coach John Tortorella has now guaranteed twice (after Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss at Toronto and again after yesterday’s practice) but because the other Eastern Conference playoff contenders the Rangers are battling are as mind-numbingly inconsistent as they are.
Case in point: last night. The eighth-place Bruins missed a chance to move six points ahead of the Rangers and instead lost, 3-2, at home to the Sabres. Meanwhile, the ninth-place Thrashers missed a chance to tie the Bruins for eighth place as they fell at home to the Hurricanes, 4-1. The same Hurricanes Atlanta just beat in Carolina to start the home-and-home series and the same Carolina that was just in 14th place in the conference before jumping three spots. As of this morning, four of the Rangers final seven games, including tonight against the Islanders, are against the bottom four teams in the conference. Which means the Rangers, despite their season-long attempt at eliminating themselves from the postseason through their erratic play, still have a shot.
