Rangers Ink Del Zotto to Contract

From NewYorkRangers.com:

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has signed defenseman Michael Del Zotto.

Michael Del Zotto wore a Rangers uniform for the first time at the 2008 Traverse City Prospects Tournament—just a few months after being drafted by the Blueshirts.
Del Zotto, 18, skated in 62 games with the Oshawa Generals and London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this season, registering 13 goals and 50 assists for 63 points, along with 78 penalty minutes. The two-time OHL All-Star finished the season ranked sixth among all OHL defensemen in scoring and assists, while his 50 assists tied for 11th in the league overall. He also ranked fifth in the league with 32 power play assists.

“It’s definitely unbelievable being part of this organization,” Del Zotto told newyorkrangers.com earlier today. “This is just a baby step, though. It’s a first step in trying to make the team and take it further.”

What do you folks think of this one? With players like Marc Staal, Bobby Sanguinetti, Matt Gilroy, Michael Sauer, Corey Potter and Dan Girardi, this team appears to be set on the blue line for years to come.

I don’t really see this as big news.  They signed a draftee.  Was there doubt that they would?

It seems to be great. The Rangers’ brass would be wise, however, to see how Tortorella handles the young blueliner through the season’s first ten games. Should Del Zotto’s ice time fall victim to Tortorella’s penchant to rely heavily on his veteran skaters, Sather will have no choice but to send Del Zotto back to London so the first year on his contract won’t kick in.
