Rangers’ Keys to Success

Good morning folks. I did a guest blog over at PuckCentral.net so feel free to check it out.

Here is a brief sample of what I wrote:

Heading into the 2009-2010 NHL regular season, there are lots of questions surrounding the New York Rangers. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone because with GM Glen Sather at the helm, there are always going to be many questions and not enough answers.

It might turn out that the answers to questions about this year’s Blueshirts might actually be the keys to their success. With that in mind, let’s take a look at just a few of the questions and how there answers can determine the fate of the 2009-2010 Rangers.

Question: Will Marian Gaborik remain healthy for the entire season?

Answer: In a lot of Rangers’ fans hearts, this is the main question that fans want answered and they want it answered well. When healthy, Gaborik can be a dominant player. In just 17 games last season, Gaborik posted 23 points in 17 games and for his career, has 437 points in 502 games. He’s got tremendous speed, a quick release, not afraid to take the puck to the net, and can help out on the power play.

I’m sorry, but if I was an NHL GM I wouldn’t touch Gaborik with a 10 foot pole. There is no question he is one of the greatest talents in the league, and parts of his game are very reminiscent of Pavel Bure. But the fact remains he is just too fragile! This guy just cannot handle the physical beating that is part and parcel of an 82 game schedule. Yes, he can be an impact player for the Rangers, but if he is only making an impact in 20 or 30 games then it is kind of a moot point.

If he were healthy he’d be a top 5 forward in the league…but he can’t because he doesn’t want to work offseason to condition himself.  Why should he?  He get’s big contracts based on his potential not what he actually provides (see DIPIETRO).  He’s going to be hurt by December probably one of those old Jaromir groin pulls…break out the Jagr peanut butter.
