Rangers Win Third in a Row

Well that was a barn burner, wasn’t it? The New York Rangers got exactly penalty killing and had timely goal scoring from Marian Gaborik to defeat the Washington Capitals by a score of 4-3.

This kind of game is the reason why the Blueshirts went out and signed a player like Gaborik - his ability to change the game. Not only did Gabby score to knot the game up at 3-3 after the Caps had taken a 3-2 lead, but he then went out and scored the game winner. He was the offensive difference maker, something the team was severely lacking last season.

The team also got some timely saves from their goaltender, Henrik Lundqvist, who actually allowed a rare bad goal when Nicklas Backstrom scored from just over center ice. Lundqvist tried to deflect the puck to the corner but simply missed it. However, Lundqvist showed his metal and bounced back to continue to give his hockey team a chance to win the game, which they eventually did.

“It was just a bad bounce that I missed with my stick,” Lundqvist told MSG’s John Giannone. “It was great to see the team battle back and win one.”

There was a particular shift that showed that the team is going to battle 100 percent no matter what the score is and that was Ryan Callahan’s first goal of the season that tied the game up a 1-1. He first blocked a shot and skated down the ice on a 2-on-1 but was denied. Later that same shift, where he was clearly tired, he got a breakaway and beat Caps’ goaltender Jose Theodore. This coming from a guy who was questionable to even play in the game.

The Rangers also had tremendous penalty killing once again. The Caps’ had four power plays in the first period and through two periods, had a total of seven but the Blueshirts denied all seven. Yes, it was definitely worrisome to take a lot of penalties against an offensive team like the Capitals but the Rangers were able to prevail, keep Alex Oveckin off the board and extend their record to 3-1 on the season.
