Redden as Good as Gone?

As of right now, the Blueshirts are almost right up to the salary cap of $60 million. Obviously, the team still has time to figure out who to dump but according to Rangers’ fans, it’s a no brainer.
The obvious choice is defenseman Wade Redden. Redden came to the Blueshirts in the off-season of 2008 when the team signed him to a ridiculous contract, hoping he’d be the same player he was with the Ottawa Senators. Unfortunately for the Rangers, that never happened.
Instead, the team got someone who contributed minimal offense, coughed up the puck in front of his own zone and for the most part, looked lost out on the ice. Blueshirt fans saw this right from the get go and as New York fans like to do in any sports, they let the player have it.
Everytime Redden touches the puck, he gets booed. Heck, anytime he even got a goal or an assist, the fans got on him. Basically put, Redden can do no right on Broadway.
Right now, Rangers’ GM Glen Sather is trying to sign restricted free agent Marc Staal and both fans and hockey/Ranger pundits alike know that is going to cost some serious coin. This makes Redden even more expendable.
According to Larry Brooks of The New York Post (Paul linked to the article earlier today), Redden will be given a chance to make the club come training camp. However, he’ll most likely be put on a short leash.
This needs to happen. Sather needs to wipe his hands, admit he made a mistake and hopefully, move on to bigger and better things.
Can Sather do that, though?
