From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:
The Rangers this morning re-assigned rookie defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti, the Trenton native who was the 21st pick in the 2006 draft, to Hartford (AHL) after he played three game for them, including his Madison Square Garden debut in Monday’s 5-2 loss to the Penguins. The move suggests that veteran Wade Redden (right shoulder/arm) will be right on his timetable of missing five to seven days and be able to return when the Rangers are at Buffalo on Saturday.
In Redden’s absence, the Rangers allowed 18 goals in three games as Sanguinetti was one of the three rookies on the blue line along with Michael Del Zotto and Matt Gilroy. But to lay any of that blame on Sanguinetti is unfair, though it does suggest the Rangers missed Redden’s presence a bit more than might have been expected.
“There’s eight goals scored (Saturday) but, remember, it wasn’t all missed coverages,” coach John Tortorella said. “Valley (backup goalie Steve Valiquette) struggled. There was some struggle there at certain times. Sure, you’d like to have another veteran defenseman. We had another young defenseman in there against a pretty good offensive team but we can’t look at it that way. We have to try to continue to improve. It looks like a spanking, 8-3, but, as a coach, we have to look at it a different way.”
Sanguinetti was a minus-1 in a scoreless three games as he took three shots. He was leading the AHL defensemen with six goals and 16 assists.
