Some Info on Alex Auld’s New Mask

From good friend of the blog Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:

The neat thing out of today’s practice was backup goalie Alex Auld unveiling his new mask (which is actually is road mask from his time with the Stars painted over). I love the design because it honors some great Rangers’ goalies. It has a likeness of Eddie Giacomin’s mask and one of John Davidson’s famous red white and blue mask, both in front of a Madison Square Garden shadow. On the other side is Mike Richter lifting the Stanley Cup (wonder if Mike will demand royalties?). On the front is the Rangers shield except there’s a No. 31 where the diagonal “Rangers” goes.

Auld said he and the Rangers’ trainers combined on the design.

“We were talking about something about Madison Square Garden and old masks and once we decided on old masks, we wanted to pay tribute to Richter, too and it developed from there,” said Auld, who is playing for his seventh NHL team and keeps a collection of his old masks at home.

Auld took delivery of his new mask this morning, though some of the Rangers off-ice staff got to the box before he did to look at it. Auld’s interim Rangers mask, which was actually his game mask from Dallas, will now be treated to revert it to its original design, so Auld can add it to his collection at home.
