Somewhat Different Without Gaborik

Without Marian Gaborik last night due to a lower-body injury, the New York Rangers fell flat to the New York Islanders by a score of 3-1.

The Islanders were all over the Blueshirts, beating them to lose pucks, generating more quality scoring chances, being more physical and in general, the Rangers made themselves an easy team to play against last night.

Obviously, if Gaborik gets injured again and ends up being out for a more significant amount of time, this team will need to learn to win without him. They will have to learn how to match the other team’s intensity and ultimately, goal-scoring capabilities as last night’s loss to Isles bought back memories of last season.

There were a few bright spots for the team despite the loss, however. Henrik Lundqvist was stellar between the pipes once again, making 29 saves on 32 shots and giving his team a chance to win a hockey game. He was the team’s best player all night and it’s a good thing he was because if he wasn’t, the team would have been in a lot of trouble.

P.A. Parenteau, called up to take Gaborik’s spot, scored his first NHL goal midway through the second period. He is currently tied for the lead in points in the AHL with 14 (8g, 6a) so last night must have been a real confidence booster for the 26-year-old.

Other than that, the Rangers will have to go back to the drawing board as they prepare for tomorrow night’s game against the Minnesota Wild. It’s a game that they should win considering the Wild’s record but remember, last night was a game that the Rangers should have won as well.

Can this really be a logical assessment given that the Rangers had just played the night before?

How about waiting a few games until we make this call?

From a fellow Ranger fan, to call it “some what different” is being nice to them.  They played terrible against a terrible team.  You’d think given the rivalry, they’d have matched the intensity that the Islanders came out with.  They played 60 minutes of uninspired hockey.  Dubinsky is beginning to look like a cheaper version of Gomez… rush the puck up the ice, make a bonehead play, other team goes with the puck the other way.

If this team wants to be successful, they’re going to have to learn how to play without Gaborik.  He’s a great player, but he’s made of glass.  They need to get used to the fact that they wont ever have him for 82 games.  If he EVER makes it to 82 games, I’ll be shocked.  He was barely even bumped in the last game and now he’s injured…

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
