Sutter: A Dirty Rat?

From Stan Fischler at MaxHockey.com:

Simply put, Sutter undermined the Devils organization in several ways and put his (former) boss in a most difficult position. To wit:

* CONTRACT: Brent was under contract for three years and ducked out after two. As we say in Brooklyn, “N.G.” NO GOOD! (Although maybe that’s how they do things in Red Deer, Alberta.)

* ALIBI: Sutter acted like a six-year-old, claiming he was homesick for the prairie life. Nonsense. He could have—and should have—brought his family with him to the Garden State. He knew that Alberta was far from New Jersey when he took the job. He knew the score when he signed his New Jersey contract. This blissful ignorance does not work in the East.

* DISRUPTION: Lamoriello had long-range plans for Sutter when he hired the man. Young players such as Zach Parise and Travis Zajac were to be developed under Brent. Free agents were to be lured to New Jersey BECAUSE of Brent. Instead, Lou may not have a new coach in place at the start of Free Agency, July 1st. That could be a major detriment to Devils’ plans.

I recall Lamoriello fired Claude Julien not long before the playoffs even though the team was winning and playing well. Lamoriello “ducked” out of Julien’s contract, undermining the Devils for no good reason. Did you take him to task for disrupting the team, Fischler?

Sutter had an “out” clause in his contract and chose to exercise it. Lamoriello accepted it. How this is so hard to understand is beyond me. Must be a slow news day.

Actually, Lou didn’t duck out on Julien’s contract - he fired him. That means that the Devils were still paying Julien, it’s not like they said “you’re fired!” and then stopped paying him. The contract doesn’t guarantee a coach to remain the coach, it just guarantees that he’ll be paid by the organization for the length of the contract.

I don’t know anyone in Brooklyn (or any other borough here in NY) that says “NG.”  Are you sure you’re actually from New York, Stan?  Or maybe he’s just stuck in the ‘40s and that was the slang back then.

Can I see a copy of his contract?  I’d love to see the out clause he has in there.

Personally, I think he should have stuck out for the whole three years.  It sucks to lose a coach like Sutter.  Maybe, in his defense, he didn’t know that Keenan would be fired.

Players get contracts and they have to stick to it no matter what.  Caoaches should be under the same rules.  I don’t think this will hurt his character but it may hurt his reliability
