As always, it is my pleasure to bring to you an e-mail interview I conducted with a host on NHL Home Ice.
This morning, I bring to you Terry Mercury. Mercury is a great friend of the blog and has done many of these with me so it is great to bring him back once again.
This time around, Mercury and I “discussed” the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
PH: When you hear the words Stanley Cup Playoffs, what comes to your mind?
TM: Tradition. One of the few traditions that really unites Canadians across all lines….economic…..geographic….racial….religious. Want to find the Canadians in a bar in another country? Find anything about hockey on television and then check who starts watching. The Stanley Cup playoffs are our national glue.
PH: What separates the Stanley Cup Playoffs from sports’s championships?
TM: It’s been around the longest….and there are so many stories…and legends associated with it.
PH: What is your greatest Stanley Cup Playoff memory?
TM: 1971…the Canadiens upset the mighty Bruins…Orr, Esposito, Bucyk, Sanderson etc…..with an untested young goalie named Ken Dryden leading the way….and 1976…when the Canadiens put an end to “goon” hockey by whipping the Philadelphia Flyers….aka The Broad Street Bullies…in 4 straight games.
PH: What are your thoughts on this year’s playoffs so far?
TM: Exciting…and unpredictable. I love the capacity for upsets in both conferences.
PH: Come June, who do you see lifting the Cup? Why?
TM: Right now….there seems to be no one who can handle the Vancouver Canucks. They just seem to have it all going this season…especially with Luongo playing as well as he is right now. Although the Washington Capitals are looking very good as well.
