The Difference between an Upset and Consistency

From Stan Fischler at MaxHockey.com:

What’s the difference between an upset and consistency?

ANSWER: San Jose Sharks—now interred by the NHL Playoff Burial Society.

The fact that San Jose paced 29 NHL teams during the regular season led about four million hockey fans to believe that this team could win its first playoff series of 2009.

It didn’t.

Therefore, about 3,999,999 hockey fans considered Anaheim’s series victory one of the great upsets since Lord Stanley of Preston decided that a puck should be round and not square nor rectangular.

I guess there must have been some point in time when Fischler was good…maybe back before color TV?

I don’t know, the more I look into the Sharks’ season, the more I suspect they were never a great team at any point.

I don’t know why this line cracks me up so much.  I guess because Stan Fischler is dead-set on the notion that there are exactly 4 million hockey fans who hold an opinion on the Ducks’ likelihood of beating the Sharks, only one of which liked Anaheim’s chances, and that we all should have each independently come to the same obvious total.

We shouldn’t all point to the Sharks downfall… The star of that series was Jonas Hiller.  It just goes to show how great he was in the first round.

HOWEVER…

The Sharks made it to the 2004 Conference Finals and that was before Thornton ever came along.  I think maybe the rest of the players expect Thornton to carry them through the playoffs and he hasn’t done that.  They have a great group of players and they just need to learn to fight for what they want.

Lecavalier may be a great choice for a trade but I doubt they’d be willing to part with him.  Iginla as well but Calgary won’t let him go either.  I could see either Spezza or Heatley going for Thornton… That may be a good trade.  Mike Richards or Kovalchuk may also be good trades.

I’m not sure exactly what to do about this “sputtering into the playoffs” Sharks team but I know that doing nothing would be even worse.  Hopefully, the players that are left after this season make good on Doug Wilson’s trust in them to preform.  The players I know for sure will stick around are Pavelski, Boyle, and Setoguchi.  Everyone else is up for grabs (except for no-trades clauses or course).  We can only hope that after three years of being utter failures in the playoffs…maybe, just maybe… They can finally learn from their mistakes.  Of course, I say that every year but who knows.  Maybe they’ll surprise us next year… Here’s Hoping…
