If a team is going to come out and play an uninspired brand of hockey, that team deserves to lose.
That was the case this afternoon as the New York Rangers were dreadful in a 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. They could not get the power play going, they left their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist out to dry and they made some stupid on-ice decisions that led to the Bruins’ two goals.
When you play that way and do those things, it will ultimately lead to a loss. Unfortunately, for the Blueshirts, this loss may have put a dagger in their playoff hopes as beat writer Andrew Gross of Ranger Rants and The Record tweeted the following after the loss:
Bruins defeat the NYRangers, 2-1, effectively ending Rangers playoff hopes.
That should say it all folks - this team will more than likely miss the playoffs for first time since the 2003-2004 season.
When looking at today’s game, you can see how this game defined the Rangers season: solid goaltending keeps them in the game but the team has trouble putting the puck in the net and in the end, the team loses the hockey game.
It was really unfortunate this afternoon because Lundqvist put on a quite a show for the team in making 29 saves, including a penalty shot stop on Daniel Paille in the second period. He did everything he possibly could to give his team a chance to win a hockey game and yet, the team in front of him did not so the same as they managed 24 shots on Bruins’ netminder Tuuka Rask, who while pretty good, was not as busy as Lundqvist.
So, where does this leave the Blueshirts? Well, the team is currently five points out of the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference with 10 games to go, which breaks down to the following:
- New York Islanders (2)
- New Jersey Devils
- Toronto Maple Leafs (2)
- Tampa Bay Lightning
- Florida Panthers
- Buffalo Sabres
- Philadelphia Flyers (2)
Sure, there are teams on there that the Rangers should beat but given the way things have gone this season, it certainly will not be easy.
The Rangers put themselves in this position and now, they have to deal with it.
