Tough Loss in Philly

The New York Rangers fired everything but the kitchen sink at the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon and came away with a 4-2 loss, putting them at risk of dropping out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference.

The team was certainly not afraid to shoot the puck as they fired 41 on Flyers’ netminder Marty Biron, who made 39 saves and was the major reason why the Broadstreet Bullies picked up two points. Aaron Asham also played well for the Flyers, scoring his sixth and seventh goals of the season.

This was a game that the Blueshirts could have won. They had lots of shots on goal, they moved the puck around well but as always, they had trouble burying their chances.

Some other things to not:

- Sean Avery had another effective game and scored for the second straight game. With that being said, isn’t easy to see how guys target him every single game? That’s what having a reputation like his does and unfortunately, he’s going to have to deal with it for the rest of the season. Hopefully though, he’ll learn to back off and just concentrate on his game.

- While Nikolai Zherdev had some good chances, he also coughed up the puck a bunch of times and if he continues to do that, he’ll end up where coach John Tortorella put him for last two periods in Thursday night’s win over the Nashville Predators. Zherdev has great hands and great moves but you can’t be perfect every single play.

- I thought Marc Staal had an off game. He seemed to be slow to the puck and got beat by a hustling Scott Hartnell, only to have Henrik Lundqvist bail him out with a great save on Mike Richards.

The two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at Madison Square Garden where hopefully for the Rangers, there will be a different outcome.

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
