After Friday night’s 10-2 loss to the Dallas Stars, it is quite obvious that the New York Rangers need to do something NOW.
However, what exactly can they do? Do they try and bring somebody like Sean Avery back? Do they fire head coach Tom Renney? Do they make a trade to try and bring in a sniper?
These are all questions that General Manager Glen Sather has to answer and unfortunately for him, he’s going to need to do it sooner rather than later.
This week will present a huge test for the sixth-place Blueshirts as they will take on the New Jersey Devils (33-17-3, 69 points, third in the Eastern Conference) tomorrow night, the Washing Capitals (34-16-4, 72 points, second in the Eastern Conference) on Wednesday night, the upstart Florida Panthers (25-19-8, 58 points, ninth in the Eastern Conference), and the Philadelphia Flyers (28-15-9, 65 points, fourth in the Eastern Conference) next Sunday afternoon. None of these games are gimme games and as such, are going to require consistent play from the team, something they have yet to do all season long.
With that said, what does Renney have to do to get his team going? What lines should he utilize? How can he get his team to score some goals both at even strength and on the power play? More importantly, what can he do to get his team to start winning more games?
We’ll certainly find out as this week progresses.

Haha, Right on the money HockeyinHD. Right on the money.
I’d have lit a fire under Redden by now. I don’t care if he makes 6.5 million dollars - If we’re watching the same tapes, I would have benched him.
First off, I know they said he worked hard in the off season. It’s not showing. He looks sluggish to catch up to people, more then I have ever seen him before. He’s lost all confidence in his offensive game for the most part.
He shows up defensively solid occasionally… That’s the best we’ve gotten out of him.
So far, he’s been the biggest disappointment on this team as far as I’m concerned.
I’m all for bringing back Avery. This team needs a little bit of heart and grit. Right about now they look lifeless.

Go into the WayBack Machine (tm) and convince the Rangers to hire a competent GM.
Other than that, he’s screwed. Rozival, Redden and Naslund are borderline stealing their combined 15.5 million, and the other 14+ mil going to Gomez and Drury isn’t exactly beating the rate of return either.
But for God’s sake… don’t pull the trigger on an 800k deal for Shanahan, right?
Jesus couldn’t get a Sather roster into the Cup Finals.
Tom Renney should sue Glen Sather for career assault, because after he gets blown out of New York he’ll never see another head coaching gig again. I mean, seriously… if you’re the coach, what could you possibly say?
“Um, Wade… I know you’re busy and everything, but seeing as you’re making 6.5 mil a year trhough 2014 do you think you might be able to score more than 1 even strength goal in 52 games? No? Oh, well… I thought I’d ask.”
“Hey, Chris… how’s it going? Good, good. Hey, I know you’re being paid like an elite center when in fact you’re a glorified 2nd liner, pretty cool right? Um… but do you think you could somehow produce like you magically did in your contract year, pretty please?”
I have no idea how Sather has managed to keep his job this long.
