What are the “Cheaper” Options for the Blueshirts?

“True Blue” New York Rangers fans know that the Blueshirts are known for spending too much money on high-priced free agents. Just look at the signings of Scott Gomez, Chris Drury and obviously, Wade Redden. That’s a lot of money that has seemingly gone down the drain in a number of different ways.

In the past, Rangers’ General Manager Glen Sather has always been quick to pull the trigger-finger when it comes to spending lots of dough on top-tier free agents. This summer, however, may be it’s time for the long-time NHL executive to look at cheaper options. With that in mind, a few names come to mind:

- Mike Knuble (Philadelphia Flyers): It’s hard to believe that back in the late 90’s (1998-2000), Knuble was a Ranger. While a Blueshirt, he scored 24 goals in 141 games but once he left, he of course picked up the scoring pace. In fact, in his last six seasons, he scored 165 goals, most of them coming with the Philadelphia Flyers.

As a Blueshirt, Knuble could certainly help the ailing power play and he could also be a guy that stands in front of the net and bangs in a lot of rebound goals. Again, goals is they key word here.

- Alexandre Giroux (Washington Capitals): Steve Zipay mentioned in his Blue Notes Blog back on June 11th that Giroux, currently property of the Washington Capitals and a member of the AHL’s Hershey Bears, would be a pretty cheap option for the Rangers. He has scored 74 goals (60 in the regular season and an additional 14 in the postseason) in the AHL and he made $475,000 last season as a 28-year-old. Might be somebody that Sather could sign for the right price.

- Chad LaRose (Carolina Hurricanes): LaRose is a grinder who found somewhat of a scoring touch this season with the Canes when he picked up 19 goals, 12 assists and 31 points. He’s a speedy grinder who is not afraid to drive to the net, something the Rangers’ were severely lacking last season.

- Mark Parrish (Dallas Stars): This is a player that is in need of a fresh start. He’s got some speed to go along with somewhat of a goal-scoring ability as he posted seasons of 30, 23, 24, 29, 19, 16, and 8 goals from 2001-2009. A guy like Gomez (assuming he remains a Blueshirt), could really help him out.
