What does the Gilroy Signing mean for the ‘D?

As posted earlier today, the New York Rangers signed Hobey Baker Award winner Matt Gilroy to a two-year deal worth $3.5 million.
On paper, this looks like a great deal for the Blueshirts. In Gilroy, 25, the team is getting an offensive-defenseman (something the team is sorely lacking) that posted eight goals and 29 assists for the Boston University Terriers this season in leading them to the NCAA Championship.
However, one has to wonder what this means to the team’s current defensive corps, which includes Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, Paul Mara, Wade Redden, Michal Rozsival and Derek Morris. In the farm system, the team has young defensive prospects Bobby Sanguinetti, Corey Potter, Michael Del Zotto, and Michael Sauer.
It could be that the team ends up saying goodbye to either or both Paul Mara and Derek Morris or may be even someone like Rozsival.
What do you folks think about this deal for the Blueshirts? Do you think Gilroy will be worth it or that he’ll end getting a lot of playing time in another organization?

Stoneman, you clearly know absolutely nothing about Matt Gilroy. He is incredible both character-wise and hockey-wise. He has overcome quite a lot of adversity to get where he is today, including the death of his younger brother as well as making the team at BU as a walk-on defenseman having played forward his whole life. So get a clue and don’t put down a guy you know nothing about.

Color me confused but…25 in college (even as a senior) is fubar. Max he should be 23 or 24 if he did a year of post-high school. No offense to the guy but that points at possible personality problems and while we shouldn’t go there…theo fleury…a move to new york and a pile of money is going to be the worse thing for this kid. Doesn’t matter if he won the hobey baker, there have been plenty of fizzled winners from the past (ahem kariya, krog, etc.) the award doesn’t always produce winners.
