Who is the leader?

Good friend of the blog Nicholas Montemagno of Rangers Tribune penned an interesting blog this morning on how the New York Rangers need leadership now more than ever if they want to qualify for the postseason:

Obviously this begins at the top with Captain Chris Drury. Drury has been through it all over the course of his life, whether it be a pitcher in the Little League World Series or a top winger on a Stanley Cup Champion Avalanche team. Out of anyone on this roster, Chris is the one that has the most past experiences with situations such as the one the Rangers are in right now, hence the reason he wears the ‘C’. Captain Clutch will in fact have to be clutch for his mates.

From what I have heard, Drury does not speak out often, but when he does, everyone listens. He has power within that dressing room, there is no doubt about that, but he does not like to abuse that power. Well, at this stage, he needs to use his power to his advantage and get his messages across to the rest of the squad.

I definitely agree with Nicholas but at the same time, I’m not sure which player is going to step up.

Since Drury is the team captain, it would make sense if he was the guy to do so. However, since being named team captain back in September/October of 2008, I have yet to see him have a Mark Messier kind of moment and really grab the bull by the horns, something the team needs someone to do now.

I think the real leader on this team is goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Everyone remembers that back in December, he held a team meeting and the team promptly went out and won four straight. Something like this needs to happen again and no, it does not have to be Henrik but someone has to get this team going.

Who is it going to be? Who is going to step up to the plate and show this team the way?
