Yzerman - Canadian Goalies on the Brain?

Steve Yzerman has been around this game long enough to know what good goaltending is. He’s seen it up close and personal with the likes of Mike Vernon, Chris Osgood, Dominik Hasek and Curtis Joseph.

Now that Stevie Y is the GM of Team Canada heading into the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he has to select three goaltenders that will help lead the team to a Gold Medal.

Who do you think will be on the long list of netminders that Yzerman will choose from? Which netminders do you think will be selected? Here is a brief sample list of netminders I can think of that could be worthy of a selection onto Canada’s Olympic team:

- Martin Brodeur
- Roberto Luongo
- Cam Ward
- Marc-Andre Fleury
- Chris Osgood
- Jean-Sebastien Giguere

Who am I missing? Who else would you select? Let’s hear’em folks!
- Carey Price

2. brodeur
3. fleury

I think you have to go with proven winners.

I think you have to take Brodeur and Ward.  I think they are the two best, most proven goalies.  I want goalies who can perform under pressure, when it counts.  Brodeur is a lock, obviously, and I think through the first two rounds Cam Ward was the best goalie in the playoffs, and I don’t think the Canes lost because of him, I think he still played pretty damn well.

I think Luongo can call me when he does better than a second round exit against a lower-ranked team, but I also think he’ll probaby get on the team if only because he’s a “home town boy”, playing for the Canucks…

I think third spot should basically go to whoever plays himself on the team during the first half of the season…

Brodeur is a no-brainer.  After that it gets interesting.

I think your last pick is a young guy that is built for the future and that probably is Mason or Fleury.  But the second pick, should be down to Osgood-Luongo-Ward.

Before the playoffs, I would have said Luongo, but his value has dropped, and how can you go against Osgood, or even Fleury for that matter.  The two goalies have taken their teams to the finals for 2 consecutive years.

But anyone who knows Brodeur knows it doesn’t matter anyways.  Marty will play every game anyways.

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
