Team USA to win Medal with Goaltending?

From Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy:

For 2010, USA Hockey will have its deepest goaltending trio between Ryan Miller, Tim Thomas and Craig Anderson, who stamped his place on the roster with a red hot month of October. The battle now for the next three and a half months will be about which one will watch from the press box at GM Place and which two will dress.

Coming into this season the debate was between Miller and Thomas for the No. 1 job; but if Anderson continues to carry the Colorado Avalanche, how can his place in the argument be denied?

Hockey Belongs in the Winter Olympics

From Mick Kern at XM NHL Home Ice:

Still, the sport of hockey belongs in the Winter Olympics, because, well, because it’s a winter sport, despite the effort of the NHL to push the Stanley Cup Final into July.

So when Toronto Maple Leafs’ GM and all-around blustery guy Brian Burke mentions that he’d like to see hockey moved to the Summer Olympics, it makes me take off my weathered Kansas City Royals cap and scratch my head.

Why?

The men’s gold medal game is arguably the centrepoint of the entire two-week sporting orgy.  At the very least, it is the winter equivalent of the men’s marathon; it’s the big bang that ends the Games.  To rip it from its rightful place, and plunk it down in the midst of the Summer Games would be almost as stupid as signing Colton Orr to a contract.

Is this a Crazy Thought?

From Stan Fischler at MaxHockey.com:

About the dumbest thing the National Hockey League could do would be continuing participation in the Olympics after Vancouver.
Gary Bettman knows it.

The owners know it.

Fans who really, REALLY, care about their teams know it.

As we will learn once again this year, NHL involvement in the Games is a large pain in the “tuuches,” and that’s not Finnish either!

Already, the beefing has begun and it’s only mid-Summer.

The NHL Players’ Association has issued an edict—it does this very well—that players should not participate in the pre-Games skates.

However, that’s really done in the World Junior Championships. Another part of me feels that the Winter Olympics are the perfect stage to feature the best hockey players in the world which means that NHL players should be included.

What do you folks think?

Puck Daddy’s Thoughts on Team Canada’s Omissions

From Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy:

As this point, your heart just goes out to Steven Stamkos(notes). The No. 1 overall pick in 2008 for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the kid battled through absurd expectations placed on him through offseason marketing—and his own struggles—in a season that saw him earn just three third-place sympathy votes for the Calder.

But he played better as the year wore on, and played very well for Team Canada in the 2009 world championships. Olympic hockey analyst Pierre McGuire thought his international experience might be enough to earn Stamkos a roster spot for Team Canada in the 2010 Winter Games.
