An Interview with a Rangers Beat Writer: Andrew Gross

Good afternoon folks. I am here to bring you an e-mail interview I did with Andrew Gross, Rangers beat writer for The Record and the blog Ranger Rants. Andrew was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to tell us about how he got into the game of hockey, how he became a hockey writer, his current work, and his thoughts on this year’s version of the Blueshirts:

PH: How did you get into hockey?
AG: I loved all sports as a kid, can remember just spreading out the New York Times sports section every night when my Dad got home and just reading everything I could and staring at the standings. I was born in 1967 so I was a small kid in the 1970s. Rangers tickets, then as now, were kind of hard to come by. My dad had one co-worker who had season tickets and sometimes we’d get Rangers tickets that way.

My first hockey game, though, was a WHA game because my dad couldn’t get Rangers tickets. This must have been the 1972-73 season because we saw the New York Raiders the one season they were called the Raiders. It was an afternoon game, if I remember, they’d play a WHA game in the afternoon and then the Rangers would play at night. The Raiders were playing the Quebec Nordiques and I was either 6 or 7. We had center ice seats, pretty close to the ice since I don’t recall there being a large crowd. Just before the opening faceoff, my dad turned to me and told me just to follow the black dot around the ice. The puck drops and immediately all the gloves are dropped and there’s a huge brawl on the ice. I turned to my dad and told him I didn’t see the block dot.

I never really learned to skate that well but in junior high, we had a fairly regular street hockey game in Greenwich Village. I was one of our regular goalies. I slowly acquired all the equipment needed but I remember playing the first game with nothing but a goalie stick and some shin pads. Only tried that once.

About Dubinsky on LTIR

In speaking with the blog Emperor earlier this afternoon, our fearless leader posed the following question to me:

What I want to know is how could the rangers put Brandon Dubinsky on LTIR? I know that it was basically done to save them cap room, but I also know the league has to approve LTIR status.  They must have pulled some string.

I put on my reporter’s cap and decided to reach out to Andrew Gross of Ranger Rants and The Republic. Gross responded with the following:

Don’t think there were any strings involved. Simple roster maneuver, really, at least as it was explained to me. Not sure if there’s a certain length of injury component but Dubinsky does qualify under LTIR guidelines. Rangers needed cap flexibility in the here and now so the move was made retroactively.

Thanks for clearing that up, Andrew!

One Rangers Reporter’s Take on the NHL Awards

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:

The NHL has its awards show tonight in Las Vegas so I thought now would be as a good time as any to share my ballot (which I had to dig through the files to find since I e-mailed it in on April 15). Surprisingly (not!), no Ranger made it as a finalist.

Click below to see how I voted and let me know if you agree/disagree and why.

HART TROPHY
1. Alex Ovechkin, Washington
2. Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh
3. Steve Mason, Columbus
4. Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit
5. Eric Staal, Carolina

Click here to see who else Gross voted for. Do you agree with this beat writer’s take?

Don’t Give It Away

The New York Rangers have won two of their last four games (had a 2-1 OT loss to the Buffalo Sabres and 6-3 spanking at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens) and look to continue their strong defensive play and timely goal scoring when they take on the New York Islanders tonight at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

After head coach Scott Gordon explained to the media that he wants to play his youngsters more, it’s easy to think that the Rangers may skate all over the Isles tonight and come up with two points. However folks, remember that this is the Blueshirts and that they’ve lost games like this to the Isles before.

As such, Rangers’ head coach Tom Renney is keeping the same lineup he used on Saturday night in the team’s 2-0 shutout victory over the Ottawa Senators. This means that Aaron Voros and Dan Fritsche will once again be scratches.

Ranger Reading

Tonight, the New York Rangers (22-12-3) return from their two-day holiday break to take on the New Jersey Devils (19-11-3) at Madison Square Garden.

Luckily for the Blueshirts, the Devils played last night and got shutout by the Pittsburgh Penguins (19-12-4) so they may a bit tired. The Devils also haven’t scored a goal in regulation in seven period. On the other hand, that’s never stopped the Rangers from losing before so why should these be considered factors now?

The main note for tonight’s game is that defenseman Michal Rozsival is out tonight because of what the team is describing as family reasons. In his place will be Corey Potter.

A Brand New Day

First off, I hope you all had a happy and safe holiday, especially you New York Ranger fans out there who were looking to shake off Tuesday night’s terrible loss to the Washington Capitals.

Tomorrow night’s game against the New Jersey Devils should be looked at as a fresh start for the Rangers. Again, they’re coming off a terrible collapse against the Caps’ and have displayed rather inconsistent hockey over the past month or so.

So what better way to shake off the cob webs and play the best hockey they can play than by beating their Hudson River rivals?

The Rangers Say Goodbye to another J.D.

As was reported here on Kukla’s Korner, Sam Weinman’s Rangers Report, Steve Zipay’s Blue Notes, Andrew Gross’s Ranger Rants and his own blog of course, John Dellapina is leaving the New York Rangers beat to go work for the National Hockey League.

He will certainly be missed by many of the beat writers on this team, especially Sam Weinman of The Journal News’ Steve Zipay of Newsday, who not only remember Dellapina for his hockey knowledge, but his knowledge on the game of life.
