Update 1:35 PM: Looks like Sanguinetti was sent down to the Wolf Pack. From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:
From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:
It’s evidently a very bad sign if you’re a Rangers’ player and John Tortorella has a little on-ice heart-to-heart with you after practice. He had one today with defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti and the Rangers’ first-round pick in 2006 has just been re-assigned to Hartford (AHL). The other day, right wing P.A. Parenteau was informed of his demotion after the skate concluded.
Sanguinetti had an assist in three preseason games - albeit one that even he joked he did no work for, giving up the puck to Marian ‘Gaborik who skated behind the net before finding Enver Lisin in the Rangers’ 4-2 win over Detroit Monday.
Sanguinetti’s demotion leaves the Rangers will open the season with a defense corps of Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, Wade Redden, Michal Rozsival, Matt Gilroy, Michael Del Zotto and Alexei Semenov. Del Zotto can’t go to Hartford - he’s either a Ranger or sent back to his junior club. My guess is the Rangers take the nine games allotted to further evaluate Del Zotto at the NHL level. My sense is the Rangers are still hoping to bring in another established but salary-cap friendly defenseman.

What About Sanguinetti?/Update 12:55PM

Throughout the pre-season, New York Ranger writers and fans have turned their attention to youngsters Matt Gilroy, Michael Del Zotto, Artem Anisimov, Evgeny Grachev, Chad Johnson and Enver Lisin. These players have stood out because they’re getting the job done, have shown a lot of poise and are making it extremely difficult on both coach Tortorella and the rest of Rangers’ management to cut them.
Lost in all of this is another Rangers’ youngster is desperately trying to make the team - Bobby Sanguinetti. The 21-year-old defenseman, drafted 21st overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, has had trouble impressing that powers that be due to the impressive play of defensemen Gilroy and Del Zotto.
While having a solid year with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL last season, Sanguinetti has had trouble putting it together for the Blueshirts both in training camp and in pre-season games. While he has made some decent plays, he’s also looked tentative with the puck, a bit unsure of himself and has had a bit of trouble adjusting to the quickness of NHL-play.

THN Excited to see Rangers’ Sanguinetti in the NHL

From Ryan Kennedy at The Hockey News:
2. Bobby Sanguinetti, D – Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL): The New York Rangers tend to take their sweet time when it comes to working prospects into the big lineup, but with Sanguinetti’s slick skills from the blueline, it’s hard to see him outside the NHL for long. Playing in the American League last year, the offensive defenseman put up an impressive 36 assists and 42 points in 78 games, but he knows bulk is often better for the big league.
“You can always get stronger,” Sanguinetti said. “A lot of it is going to come with age and maturing, but that’s what I planned on doing this summer and it worked.”
As for making the Blueshirts this season, the American-born defender knows he has a good shot.
“There are two spots available at camp right now and three or four of us really competing for them,” Sanguinetti said. “I’m just going to go in and play my game. They said they want me to help offensively and chip in on the power play, so I’m really excited for it.”
Since New York’s power play was 29th overall in the regular season last year and statistically worse in the playoffs, it’s probably time to give the kid a shot. Drafted 21st overall in 2006.

Another Shutout for The King

For the second time in three games, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist picked up a shutout (his second of the season). This time, it came at the hands of the struggling Ottawa Senators in a 2-0 victory.
This was a game in which Lundqvist had excellent rebound control, was in position for both the first and second shots (if there was one) and more importantly, he gave his club a chance to win a hockey game, which they did thanks to goals by Brandon Dubinsky (finally) and a beauty from Lauri Korpikoski off a great feed from Nikolai Zherdev.
As a team, the Blueshirts were disciplined, tough in front of their own net and made the game easy for Lundqvist. When they do things like that, it’s easy to see why they would win.

Will He Actually Play and other Ranger Musings

As Sam Weinman reported in his blog, the New York Rangers have called up defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti in the event that defenseman Michal Rozsival cannot play tonight after suffering a facial injury in last night’s 2-1 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
The question that both Weinman and I are wondering is what does this say about Corey Potter? Potter played with the Blueshirts a few weeks ago and did just fine and yet, when the team is in a bind like they could be tonight, they potentially look to Sanguinetti. Yes, Sanguinetti is an all star in the AHL and leading the Hartford Wolf Pack with 20 points in 39 games, but is he ready to step in against a potentially potent offense in the Ottawa Senators?
