Who To Watch at Traverse

Tonight marks the start of the Traverse City Prospects Tournament, where the New York Rangers will take on John Davidson’s St. Louis Blues.
For the prospects participating in this tournament, it is a chance for them to give the organization a glimpse of what is to come. It is also a chance for the organization to see what exactly they have stocked in the cupboard.
The following prospects are ones that I will be watching throughout the tourney:
- RW, Christian Thomas: Steve Thomas’s son was very, very good at the Team Canada Junior Evaluation camp and also had 99 points (54 goals and 45 assists) with the Oshawa Generals last season.
- LW, Carl Hagelin: Hagelin is set to begin his first professional season this fall. With that in mind, if he can have a strong showing at this tournament, he may get a real serious look at the team’s training camp in a few weeks.

From the New York Rangers:
Thomas skated in 66 games with the Oshawa Generals (OHL) this season, registering 54 goals and 45 assists for 99 points, along with 38 penalty minutes and a plus-20 rating. He established career-highs in points, goals, assists, power play goals (19), game-winning goals (nine), penalty minutes, and plus/minus rating. Thomas ranked second in the OHL in goals and sixth in points, and tied for first in the league in power play goals and third in game-winning goals.
He led Oshawa in goals, assists, points, power play goals, and game-winning goals, tied for second in shorthanded goals (two), and ranked third in plus/minus rating. Thomas posted a career-high, 28 multi-point performances, including four hat tricks. He tallied a career-high, four goals on February 11 at Sudbury, to begin a career best, eight-game scoring streak (10 goals, four assists over the span) and season-high, five-game goal streak (eight goals).
In the 2011 OHL Playoffs, Thomas led the league in postseason scoring with 19 points and nine goals at the time of Oshawa’s elimination in the second round, having recorded at least one point in nine of 10 contests and six multi-point performances.

As the New York Rangers continue to become a younger hockey team, one has to hope that there will be more stories like the one I am about to point out to you, thanks to a Kukla’s Korner reader.
Blueshirts’ prospect Christian Thomas of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals is now tied for the league in goals with 52 after picking up a hat trick last night. By passing the 50-goal mark, Thomas’s father (former NHLer Steve Thomas) and him became the first father and son duo to have 50 plus goal seasons in the OHL.
You can read more about the game here.
The future certainly looks bright on Broadway, eh?

Talking Rangers Draft
by Patrick Hoffman on 06/27/10 at 10:40 PM ET

Good evening folks. Now that the NHL Draft is over, I figured I’d weigh in on my thoughts regarding what the Blueshirts did.
First off, the team’s first pick, Dylan McIlrath, caught me off guard. I thought the team was looking for some scoring talent up front and yet, they selected McIlrath. However, after reading what Gordie Clark had to say about the kid, I think this pick may turn out to be exactly what the Rangers need.
As all Ranger fans now, a guy like Michael Del Zotto has a lot of offense in him. If he were to have a partner like McIlrath, Del Zotto could take even more chances on offense because McIlrath would stay back, play his position and be physical. I know it’s too early to tell but this kind of pairing could end up compairing to the likes of a Brian Leetch-Jeff Beukeboom tandem.
I also liked the pick of Christian Thomas, Steve Thomas’s son. The younger Thomas has a nose for the net and scored 41 goals and 66 points in 61 games this season with the Oshawa Generals of the OHL.
