Rangers Push On Despite Injuries

Last season, the Rangers had tremendous luck when it came to injuries, losing a remarkably low 31 manpower games to injury or illness. However, just six weeks into the 2009-10 campaign the Rangers have seen that last year’s good fortune regarding injuries has not carried over into a new season.
Just one look at their last game in Calgary on Saturday night provided a glimpse into what a difference a year can make.
Center Brandon Dubinsky will miss a few weeks of action with the hand injury he suffered blocking a shot last weekend in Calgary. Already without No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist and rugged forward Donald Brashear in the lineup due to minor injuries, the Rangers lost their captain, Chris Drury, to a concussion just 49 seconds into the contest, and another top center, Brandon Dubinsky, who broke a bone in his right hand while blocking a shot in the second.

Learning to Like Donald Brashear

There is no question about it - New York Rangers forward Donald Brashear is one tough cookie.
Call him a goon, call him a fighter, call him an enforcer or call him a career fourth, but this season folks, he’s a New York Ranger and as Ranger fan, you’re going to have to learn to put up with him.
Brashear knows that he’s never been liked by Blueshirt fans no matter what team he has played on. However, Ranger fans aren’t exactly enamored with him because of the devastating hit he put on Blair Betts last season.
Jim Cerny, the Rangers’ beat writer for NewYorkRangers.com, said the following about Brashear:
Just because he signed with the Rangers as a free agent on July 1, Brashear did not expect to be greeted with open arms and standing ovations from the Garden Faithful. He understood that emotions run long and deep, and it would take time for the fans to accept Brashear as one of their own, particularly after his hit that sidelined one of the Rangers last spring.
“If the fans are mad, they’re mad,” said Brashear, who squared off twice with Sugden on Thursday. “Maybe it’s because of Blair Betts, I don’t know. I don’t really read into it. I’ve played in this league a long time and I know what I can do, and how I can help the team. I’m just going to try and show it and hopefully they can appreciate it.”

Ranger Fans Warming to Brashear?

Rangers fans wasted no time letting Donald Brashear know they’re still not over the hit that leveled former Ranger Blair Betts during last year’s Conference Quarterfinals.
In fact, when Brashear was introduced Wednesday night at a Rangers Fan Fest event in the lobby of The Theater at Madison Square Garden by emcee Dave Maloney, he was received by a mix of boos and cheers. Brashear quickly attempted to quell the uprising when he reached the stage.
“Enough booing,” Brashear said. “I’ll take you all one by one.”
Predictably—and perhaps intelligently, the boos changed to cheers and laughter, and the fans seemed to warm to Brashear’s self-deprecating humor as the hour-long event went on.

Grading the Blueshirts on July 1

If I had to grade New York Rangers General Manager Glen Sather on yesterday’s performance on the first day of free-agency, I would have to give him an incomplete. Yes, he signed two players and yes, one of them has a lot of potential to succeed on Broadway but we’ve all seen Sather do stuff like this before and nothing ever come to fruition.
Signing Marian Gaborik was extremely risky. On one hand, Sather managed to sign an offensive superstar who has scored 30-or-more goals in five of his eight seasons, including a career-high 42 in the 2006-07 season. He totaled 437 points in 502 career games, all with the Minnesota Wild, and he’s just 27 years old. If these were the only things that Ranger fans knew about him, there’d be no problems and even Sather thinks that the team improved with this signing.
“Gaborik is an exciting guy to watch play,” Sather told Jim Cerny of NewYorkRangers.com. “He can skate, and he does a lot of great things. He’s a great player, and he’s young. I certainly think he’s in the top ten in this league.”

Sather - Brashear?

Not sure what Glen Sather was thinking when he signed Donald Brashear, do you? Yes, he’s an enforcer who can fight but that’s about all he can do, unless Sather and the rest of the Rangers’ brass saw something else.
What do you folks think of this?
