All About Branding

From Wayne Karl at MaxHockey.com:

Before either of them had even been drafted into the NHL, let alone play their first game, John Tavares and Victor Hedman began their careers as product pitchmen.
On June 25, a day before the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Reebok-CCM Hockey showed its faith in the eventual first and second overall selections by signing both to long-term, head-to-toe endorsement deals for on- and off-ice product.

Tavares, of Mississauga, Ont., will represent CCM, and Hedman, from Sweden, will endorse Reebok. Both deals involve on-ice equipment such as sticks, skates and helmets, as well as off-ice wear. In Tavares’s case, the arrangement calls for his own apparel line, while Hedman will have footwear in bearing his name launched in Sweden.

Looking at the Best Draft Results in the Last Two Decades

From John Kresier at NHL.com:

Try as they might, NHL general managers know most of the players they select during the Entry Draft never will wear an NHL sweater. The object is to get maximum value out of their picks—finding the stars they need to build a team around, the role players to support them and the depth to trade for what they can’t find.

Obviously some teams are better at this than others—and they do it in different ways. The core of Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup-winning team was Marc-Andre Fleury, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, all chose with the first or second pick of the draft from 2003-05. Detroit, which lost to Pittsburgh in the 2009 Stanley Cup Final after beating the Penguins in 2008, has fared well with a handful of later-round picks—stars such as Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk—while having just three first-round picks on its roster—Marian Hossa, Brad Stuart and Nicklas Kronwall. And of those three, only Kronwall was chosen by the Wings.

Islanders: Keep an Open Mind

From Zachary Weinstock at MaxHockey.com:

Team projections on the collection of masochists set to slither into Nassau Coliseum Friday night indicate that at least as many Islander fans are willing to come watch their club draft an NHL talent with one sentence as are willing to come watch their club lose to NHL talent for 60 minutes.

And incase you haven’t heard, the building will be torn to crumbs if the Islanders don’t select John Tavares.

This might not even be a joke. Area lounge R.C. Dugans is offering $1 pints until midnight if the London Knights winger goes first overall. They’ll be 25 cents if he doesn’t!

So either way, it’s a night for George Washington adorned currency.
