Free Agency: NYR, NYI and NJD

From Stan Fischler at Game On:

Not that anything too serious should be read into it, but Colton Orr and Aaron Voros accompanied Glen Sather to last week’s Canadian Society annual hockey dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. Does this mean either – or both – will be back with the Blueshirts? Not necessarily. Now that the hated Flyers have Chris (not so Mr. Clean) Pronger, Orr might be the best bully-deterrent on Broadway.
Lou Lamoriello, to the surprise of most, didn’t demand that former head coach Brent Sutter sit out for a season or ask for anything in return from the Flames. Instead, he had this to say: “Once you give consent, because of the new rules in the NHL there is no recourse and no compensation.”

Says Lamoriello, “There should be compensation in situations like this for all the obvious reasons, but there isn’t. That’s a league rule and you accept it.”

Interest in Redden? (Not an April Fool’s Joke)

From the Toronto Globe & Mail via at Blueshirt Banter:

Just found this update on the Toronto Globe and Mail, here are the highlights of particular interest to us:

There is belief the Maple Leafs have been zeroing in on New York Rangers defenceman Wade Redden and forward Peter Schaefer of the Boston Bruins.

Schaefer, 31, was buried in the minors by the Bruins last season because of salary cap concerns. He has one more year on his contract at $2.3-million (U.S.). Redden, 32, was signed to a six-year, $39-million unrestricted free-agent deal last summer, and the Rangers would not be averse to moving him.

The Leafs have plenty of salary cap room – $10-million to $13-million depending on the contract given to restricted free-agent forward Mikhail Grabovski – to accommodate both players.

But if the Leafs have interest in Redden, it means Burke must be serious about trading away either Tomas Kaberle or Pavel Kubina. The two veteran defenceman have no-trade contracts, but a window in which they can be traded opens when the draft commences on Friday.

“I’m going [to Montreal] to listen to offers,” said Leafs GM Brian Burke.

Way to Go Leetchy

From NewYorkRangers.com:

It’s official. Rangers great Brian Leetch is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In a conference call on Tuesday afternoon, the Hall of Fame Selection Committee announced that Leetch would be part of the 2009 Hall induction class, along with Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille and Steve Yzerman, who were all inducted in the player category.

Also entering the Hall is New Jersey Devils President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello, who was added in the Builder’s Category.

Leetch, who grew up in Cheshire, Conn., becomes the only Rangers draft pick other than Brad Park to earn hockey’s highest honor. He is also the first U.S.-born defenseman in the Hall and only the second with American citizenship, following Rod Langway.

Leetch, whose No. 2 was retired by the Rangers organization on Jan. 24, 2008, is now a member of both the Hockey Hall of Fame and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, which he entered last year. He is the 45th former Ranger to be selected to the Hall, while Robitaille, who spent two years as Leetch’s teammate in the mid-1990s, is the 46th.

This Blogger Really Wants Colton Orr Back in Blue…Do You?

From Scotty Hockey:

Orr simply has to be re-signed by the Rangers. Sure John Tortorella doesn’t care for fourth lines, doesn’t care for fighters and wants to make the team faster. It doesn’t matter: Tortorella and the Rangers need Colton Orr.

It is no coincidence that the first time that Colton Orr was scratched all season long was the only one where a Ranger was seriously injured. As I said back then, had Orr remained in the lineup Donald Brashear would have had someone to worry about on the ice. Instead he had free reign to hit whomever he liked and he did, costing the Rangers their top defensive forward and penalty killer Blair Betts.

Colt missed eight games in ‘07-08 and the enforcer role had to be passed around; the results weren’t pretty. Remember Brandan Shanahan wrestling Steve Ott? Or Dubi holding on for dear life against Mike Komisarek? Horrifying.

Click here for more. What do you folks think? Should Orr be resigned? Is he more valuable than Aaron Voros?

Changes Coming to Madison Square Garden?

From Terry Lifton at Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal:

The mantra at MSG is “change.”

Change, as in NBA veteran Scott O’Neil, who was named president of MSG Sports last July. That was followed by hiring a phalanx of new sales and marketing executives to help sell a building renovation that started at $500 million but now is at the “we won’t discuss price right now” phase.

Change, as in more and bigger sponsor inventory, with plans for a new entrance, clubs, and skyways across the top of the renovation, which is scheduled for completion in time for the 2012-13 NBA and NHL seasons.

Change, as in new suites, so luxurious that at the high-end, the choice of amenities includes a fireplace or a waterfall. Prices for the super-premium, event-level suites also aren’t being discussed publicly, though we are hearing they are in excess of a million dollars each.

Forthcoming amenities aside, the spin at a recent MSG sponsor summit was an altogether “new” Garden, one willing to work more closely than ever with its corporate partners. “We need to be better at asking questions and you need to be better at giving us feedback,” O’Neil told a crowd of around 80 sponsor and agency representatives.

Fact or Fiction and Ranger news

From PuckCentral.net:

According to Andy Strickland of HockeyBuzz - (yeah, I’m about to quote that site):

The Rangers and Nik Antropov are having some preliminary discussions as they would like to re-sign the 29 yr old sniper, but in reality there is very little the Rangers can do unless they move some bodies.

I’m told Antropov is seeking a 4-5 yr. deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $4-5 million per season.

Sources inform me that Antropov has cut ties with agent Don Meehan.

Click here for more. Obviously, this smart blogger knows where the information is coming from but it’s still worth a post since Nik Antropov was solid as a Blueshirt in his time here. However, if he is really looking for a 4-5 year deal at the pirce ($4-5 million per season), I can’t see him coming returning next season. What are your thoughts on that?

The same blog also points us to a story by Larry Brooks of The New York Post that says that enforcer Colton Orr will most likely not be returning to Broadway next season:

One very pissed off Rangers fan reporting that according to Larry Brooks of the NY Post today:

The Rangers, by the way, have made no effort to re-sign Colton Orr, who will have no trouble at all scoring a multi-year deal within hours of the opening of the market. We’re told Florida is keenly interested in the heavyweight.

What do you folks think of that?

Rangers Draft Priorities

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:

All along, I’ve been saying the Rangers’ two biggest priorities in this draft is forwards who can finish (not necessarily Finnish forwards) - particularly some good wingmen - and a goalie with the potential to be an NHL starter. The priorities are in that order, of course.

The Rangers, unless they make a move, draft 19th. So some possible names to look out for: London (OHL) center Nazem Kadri, Omaha (USHL) center Louis Leblanc and Brandon (WHL) center Scott Glennie, though he may be long gone at No. 19.

Blogger Plays Ranger GM

From Puck Central:

If I’m Glen Sather, here’s what I do between now and October to have a better team for the 2009-10 NHL season.

1) Attempt to move up in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft (NYRs currently have the 19th overall pick) or trade that first round pick if it can significantly improve the Rangers offense. [Example]

2) If I’m not able to move up & choose with the 19th overall pick, I choose the best player available. Currently the Rangers need forwards because they have many defensive prospects in the system. But, making a trade in the future is always possible. In my opinion, you always choose the best player available, I don’t endorse drafting based on organizational needs for the most part. So, if the best player available is a defenseman, that’s the player that you pick. Then, down the road it’s always possible to trade that player or another defenseman in the system for a position that is needed.

3) Try to trade Redden, Drury, Gomez & Rozsival - in that particular order. All four players have contracts that are a burden to the Rangers roster and getting rid of any of the four would be a major help. The main goal is to clear salary cap room, getting something of value in return would be a bonus!

Click here for more. Certainly looks like a lot of people want to be Glen Sather these days. I wonder why?

Rebuilding the New York Rangers: All About Offense

After watching the New York Rangers’ terrible end to an otherwise mediocre season, it’s apparent that the team needs to dump salary and rebuild. Any Ranger fan could tell you this but the question remains: How do you rebuild a hockey team?

I’m of the belief that you start in goal. Luckily for the Blueshirts, they have Henrik Lundqvist to hold down the fort for the next four or five seasons and with 142 career wins, a career goals against average of 2.31 and a save percentage of .917, the 27-year-old Swedish netminder is only going to get better.

In the goaltending pipeline, the team has Matt Zaba. Zaba’s just 25 years old and in his rookie season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, went 25-10-0 with a 2.33 goals against average, a .920 save percentage and two shutouts. Sure, Lundqvist is in for the long haul but in hockey, especially when it comes to netminders, you never know what can happen.

Willing to Give up Korpedo?

From Ryan McFadden at Blueshirt Banter:

I made a pitch for Frolov at this years trade deadline. He’s a perfect fit for the Rangers as he’s a big strong goal scoring winger who most importantly has low cap hit. Frolov has notched 30 or more goals twice in the past three seasons. He’s believed to be available for trade and if the Kings do decide to go after Dany Heatley, there’s little doubt Frolov would be involved. It should be said first that this trade is completely dependant on what direction Dean Lombardi is going to take the Kings this season. There was a wide spread rumor that he had traded his 5th overall pick and Jack Johnson for Chris Pronger but it was shot down by Lombardi himself. A trade of that magnitude would signal that the Kings are no longer rebuilding and looking to stockpile draft picks and young talent. However, if Lombardi is looking for one more year of development and rebuilding, this trade would be perfect sense.

The Kings would get the Rangers 19th overall pick which would give them two 1st round picks. They would also get Lauri Korpikoski who is a solid 3rd liner at this stage of his young career. There has been some talk amongst Rangers fans that Sather should trade down since they are in a weak draft position for what they need.

Remembering the 1994 Stanley Cup Champion New York Rangers

I’m sure New York Ranger fans remember what June 14th, 1994 means - the year they won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 54 years! Unfortunately, with the way this organization is structured right now, it looks like it could be another 54 years (I really hope I’m wrong).

With that in mind, there was actually a lot of coverage regarding the Blueshirt’s dream Cup in 1994. Feel free to check them out:

Keenan Talks about How to Handle Game 7

From John McGourty at NHL.com:

NHL.com: Under the new rules, can you play the style you won with in 1994?

Keenan: “Our style with the Rangers was more fitted for the current rules than any other team then because we had dynamically proficient skilled players. We had Mark Messier, Alex Kovalev, Adam Graves, Brian Leetch, Steve Larmer, Sergei Zubov, Esa Tikkanen and Glenn Anderson. That’s a highly skilled group, game-breaking players that could have easily played, for the most part, the game played today. We had a couple of players who would struggle today but we were suited for the game then and the game now.”

Nice to hear Keenan speak so glowingly of the 1994 New York Rangers Cup team he coached. Click here for more.

Heatley and the New York Rangers: Would you do it?

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:

You point out that Dany Heatley wants out of Ottawa. Then you note that his $7.5 million annual salary approximates Scott Gomez’s cap hit to the Rangers, plus the fact that both have limited movement clauses in their contract. Then you wisely suggest that Heatley’s offensive prowess might be a good fit for a team that struggles to score like the Rangers.

Seriously, if you’re GM Glen Sather, you have to at least pick up the phone and see if there are any parameters to make a deal. No way the Senators do Heatley for Gomez straight up (at least I wouldn’t if I were the Senators) but would Gomez and a first-round pick do the trick, or maybe Gomez and one of the Rangers D-man prospects and/or a first-round pick. I’m not sure and perhaps the price goes too high. But, if you’re Glen Sather, you have to pick up the phone.

Scotty Hockey Looks at Potential Free Agents for the Blueshirts

In a time where there isn’t much New York Ranger news being thrown around, the fantastic Scotty Hockey gave Blueshirt fans a bit of a preview on who he thinks the team should go after:

1- Steve Sullivan, Nashville: Let’s get this right out of the way, no matter how well he says he is, Sullivan is an injury risk. He missed basically two seasons of hockey due to back problems and is beholden to Nashville for their patience in letting him take his time to make a comeback. He is also 34 and undersized at 5’9. However, he is a gritty hard worker who puts points on the board. He can score timely goals and kill penalties while setting a good example for teammates - basically a better version of the Chris Drury we had last season and he was only paid $3.2m. At his age and with his history, he should be willing to take a big pay cut while getting an incentive-laden deal.

2- Johnny Oduya, NJ: Sure the Rangers are deepest at defense, but you can’t pass up the opportunity when a well-rounded player like him becomes available. Just 27 years old, the Swede is solid in all situations being smart in his own zone and a smooth puck mover. He made just $600k and even with a deserved raise should still be a bargain. And just think about how great it would be to take such a valuable asset away from the Devils! Poor Lou, it would be sweet justice for letting us take Gomez away (more on him later).

Cheechoo - A fit on Broadway?

Two days ago, Steve Zipay of Blue Notes asked New York Ranger fans if they would like to obtain San Jose Sharks’ winger Jonathan Cheechoo should he be made available:

The Sharks have Thornton, Marleau, Clowe, Pavelski, Setoguchi, Mihalek and more upfront and a lot of bitterness from the playoff loss to the Ducks. Little while ago, the word from a spy out West is that Jonathan Cheechoo is being made available. Makes sense, we heard the same thing at the trade deadline.

The right wing will be 29 in July. He’s 6-1, 200. Cap hit would be $3 mil in 09-10 and 10-11. Affordable, if you believe that he can turn it around once he’s off the third line.

Cheechoo did score 56 goals and 37 with Thornton before slipping to 23 and just 12 in 66 games last season.

Would you want him? If you do, who would you place him with? Could he help Scott Gomez or Chris Drury turn their games around or would he be another free-agent bust who signed on Broadway? What are your thoughts?

Rangers Ink Del Zotto to Contract

From NewYorkRangers.com:

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has signed defenseman Michael Del Zotto.

Michael Del Zotto wore a Rangers uniform for the first time at the 2008 Traverse City Prospects Tournament—just a few months after being drafted by the Blueshirts.
Del Zotto, 18, skated in 62 games with the Oshawa Generals and London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this season, registering 13 goals and 50 assists for 63 points, along with 78 penalty minutes. The two-time OHL All-Star finished the season ranked sixth among all OHL defensemen in scoring and assists, while his 50 assists tied for 11th in the league overall. He also ranked fifth in the league with 32 power play assists.

“It’s definitely unbelievable being part of this organization,” Del Zotto told newyorkrangers.com earlier today. “This is just a baby step, though. It’s a first step in trying to make the team and take it further.”

What do you folks think of this one? With players like Marc Staal, Bobby Sanguinetti, Matt Gilroy, Michael Sauer, Corey Potter and Dan Girardi, this team appears to be set on the blue line for years to come.

Rangers and Marian Gaborik: Make sense?

From Blueshirt Banter:

Let’s start with the positives. Gaborik, when healthy, is certainty one of the best scorers in the league. He has scored 30 or more goals 5 times in his 8 year NHL tenure; he has notched 40 once. Probably the most impressive stat is how quickly he scored his goals. In 2006-2007 he scored 30 goals and 27 assists for 57 points in 48 games. Last year, although he only played in 17 games, he scored 13 goals and added 10 assists. The man is quite obviously a point machine. If you need more evidence of his goal scoring ability: you all may remember his little five goal outburst against the Rangers two years ago. He is a playoff performer as well. In 29 playoff games he has 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points. In 2003 he has 9 goals and 8 assists in 18 playoff games, so he doesn’t disappear when it counts.

What do you Ranger fans think? Think Gaborik is worth signing this summer?

Questioning Drury’s Captaincy

From The Schwab at Blueshirt Banter:

Chris Drury might have the toughest expectations to live up to as a captain for the New York Rangers. Not that all captains don’t have expectations put on them, but when a player is given a C for the Blueshirts, it’s something a little different if you ask me. With Markus Naslund gone and an Assistant role opened up, I wondered if there would be murmurs of changing Drury our as captain, as I have seen different rumblings from fans about Drury not being up to par as a Rangers captain over the season.

What do you folks think? Does Drury deserve to be captain or would he be better suited for an assistant role?

Dreaming about Kovalchuk

From Steve Zipay at Blue Notes:

So, they’d want a forward and a prospect and a pick, at least. Zherdev? I’d do it.
Dubinsky? Tough call, but yes. Anisimov? Hmm. Not all three. Grachev? No.

But where’s the money coming from? The Rangers have to clear some more space. The $4 mil from Naslund helps, but isn’t enough.

Naslund Supplies Breathing Room to Blueshirts

As I’m sure all of you New York Ranger fans are aware, forward Markus Naslund officially announced his retirement from the NHL yesterday.

While he wasn’t a bad Ranger (Over 20 goals for the 10th consecutive season), he had certainly slowed a bit and the team needed something like this to happen in order to clear some cap room. It’s too bad that Wade Redden won’t consider doing the same thing as that would give the Blueshirts a lot more room under the cap to sign players that would make an impact.

Since I wasn’t around much this weekend, I wanted to get your thoughts on the retirement of New York Rangers’ forward Markus Naslund.

This was first reported by Larry Brooks of the NY Post. Naslund’s time on Broadway wasn’t the greatest as he looked every bit his 35 years of age. As Brooks reports, Naslund was due $4 million in salary next season.

If Jagr Returns to the NHL, Edmonton is the place to be

Jaromir Jagr can see himself in an Edmonton Oilers jersey someday.

While the 37-year-old plans to play out the final year of his contract with Avangard Omsk of the Continental Hockey League next season, he hasn’t ruled out a return to the NHL in the future.

And if he does decide to go back to North America, he’d love to play for the team that offered him a free-agent contract last summer and made inquiries about his services during the season.

Do you think Jaromir Jagr, who last played with the New York Rangers, would be a good fit for the Oilers?

What do you folks think?

Rangers’ Breakup Day Reactions

Not to beat a dead horse here but today marks breakup day for the New York Rangers as players, coaches and other team staff members look to head home for the offseason.

Rick Carpiniello of The Journal News is there to cover the event. Here is a quote from head coach John Tortorella, where he admits that this team needs more to succeed:

On whether there’s not enough top-end talent, or whether the top-end guys not good enough?

“Both. I don’t want to step out of bounds because i’m not the manager of the club and we’re going to have, in two weeks, meetings regarding this. But I think I can step out and say I don’t think we have it totally as far as within our team, and I don’t think we got it totally from the people within our team.

“This is definitely going to be addressed.”

Grading the New York Rangers

Over at Scotty Hockey, Scotty grades each New York Ranger based on his performance during the 2008-09 season.

Here’s a sample:

Brandon Dubinsky: What kind of player in Brandon Dubinsky? The pillar of power that started the season, the frustrated youngster who couldn’t do anything right and went 23 games without a goal in one stretch or the tough battler who used his size and strength for good in the playoffs? The thought to cut in and use his size and positioning to free Avery from the boards set up the lone goal in Game 7 and was a clutch veteran move. Should he continue to progress and find a scoring touch with some consistency to go with the dedication to his teammates, that C should be his in a season or two. B-

Drury - Should he Have played?

I posed this question on my latest entry for SNYRangersblog.com and now, I am asking the same of all readers at Kukla’s Korner.

As Larry Brooks mentioned in his article in The New York Post, New York Rangers team captain Chris Drury played through the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a broken hand. This would explain why he didn’t shoot the puck much, why he had one hand on the stick a lot of the time and also why he seemed extremely tentative with the puck.

Do you think that Drury should have sat out so that the team could utilize someone who would be more effective or do you think that Drury did the right thing by playing?

What are your thoughts?

What’s the Big Deal With Varly?

Over on Greg Wyshynski’s Twitter account, posters are giving him grief because Washington Capitals’ 21-year-old netminder Simeon Varlamov is not on the Conn Smythe list as a potential Stanley Cup playoff MVP thus far.

What I want to know is why are the fans and media over-hyping this young netminder so quickly? Yes, Varlamov had excellent statistics in the first round (4-2, 1.17 goals against average, .952 save percentage, and two shutouts) and yes, he helped his club advance to the next round. However, this was against a New York Rangers team that only took 145 shots against him, many of the low quality variety and against a team that virtually has no offense.

I’m not saying that he’s a bad goaltender nor am I saying that he doesn’t deserve the accolades that he is getting right now. What I am saying is let’s not over-hype this kid until he gets truly tested in the next round against a much tougher Pittsburgh Penguins hockey club. I doubt he’ll be seeing lo quality scoring chances against the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz, Sergei Gonchar, Bill Guerin, Jordan Staal, etc.

What’s your take on Varlamov?

Same Old Rangers Get Knocked Out by the Capitals in Game 7

This was a typical Tom Renney-style of hockey game for the New York Rangers and much like it did during the regular season, it cost them dearly. This time, however, it cost them the season as the Washington Capitals were able to come back from a 3-1 series lead to defeat the Rangers in Game 7 by a score of 2-1.

The Blueshirts looked great in the first period, outshooting the Caps by an 8-2 margin and getting a goal from Nik Antropov. However, they ended the period tied thanks to a fluky goal off the stick of Alexander Semin and from that point on, the Caps took it to the Rangers.

Much like during the regular season, the Rangers struggled to find offense and had to revert to relying on their defense and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to save the day. While Lundqvist was often spectacular in making 22 saves, the game-winning goal he allowed to Sergei Fedorov is one that I’m sure he wants back as he once again got beat high short side, something that happened a lot this series.

Tortorella Relaxed Heading into Game 7

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:

“Game 7s you can get yourself so wrapped up and say, ‘Oh, crap, this is Game 7!” Tortorella said. “And you go out and get paralyzed. Where it is a game of mistakes and both teams are going to make them. You need to allow yourself to play in this situation and not paralyze yourself. Some guys can do it and some guys can’t. Some guys get so uptight they do paralyze themselves and they’re not going to be a factor in the game. Other guys look at this as an opportunity and allow themselves to play and just free themselves.”

Antropov a Flop on Broadway in This Year’s Playoffs

From Damien Cox at The Toronto Star:

Antropov, never regarded as a big-game player, was goal-less in 13 playoffs outings back in 2004, the last year the Leafs made the playoffs. This spring, he has gone missing again, this time in a New York Rangers uniform.

He hasn’t scored in the last five games, and along with Nikolai Zherdev and Markus Naslund, Antropov is being fingered as one of the offensive culprits behind New York’s collapse after once holding a 3-1 lead in this Eastern Conference series with Washington that will conclude with a Game 7 tonight.

Capitals Win Would be Right Result

From Ken Campbell at TheHockeyNews.com:

But really, is anyone outside the metropolitan New York area even hoping the Rangers win this thing? After all, which would you rather watch in the second round – a slow, plodding, old team with a brilliant goaltender or a dynamic young team with the most explosive talent in the game today? Would you rather watch Ovechkin weave his magic and be a dangerous player every time he steps on the ice or watch Sean Avery be a menace to himself, his opponents and his own team every time he gets out there? Would you rather see a guy such as Bruce Boudreau have some success, or would you like to watch John Tortorella scowl his way through another round and do things that embarrass and hurt his organization?

Hockey Front and Center Tonight

From Shawn P. Roarke at NHL.com

With a heat wave blanketing the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, it may not have felt like a time for hockey.

Yet in two NHL buildings—the Prudential Center here and the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.—there was no denying that hockey was front-and-center.

That’s what happens when you play in a Game 7. And, Tuesday night, the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals are hosts for the only two Game 7s of the first round. First, at 7 p.m., the Capitals host the New York Rangers (Versus, TSN, RDS) in one of the more exciting series in recent memory. Thirty minutes later, in Newark, the Devils face the Carolina Hurricanes (7:30 p.m. ET, Versus, TSN2, RIS) in the definition of a back-and-forth series.

Tortorella: What Are We Made Of?

From Dan Rosen at NHL.com:

As he prepares his team to do so Tuesday and then coaches them through the process a few hours later against the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center, he’s excited to find out a heck of a lot about the guys he’s got.

“Do they care? Absolutely,” Tortorella said Tuesday morning. “As we go through an experience like this, a Game 7—and, again I’m still learning a little bit about the personnel—there are certain levels of care. This is going to be a great experience for me in coaching this team in a Game 7 to see in this type of situation, with some of the things that have gone on in this series and all the stuff going on around them, how guys handle it.

“I think we have got good people, but I always believe that people can care, and then people can really care,” he continued. “We’ll find out as they go through, but I hope all 20 of them really care. Those are the things I look at as we continue to grow.”

Time for Game 7

There is nothing like a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Both teams go all out and when all is said and done, leave it all on the ice whether they win or lose.

Tonight, the New York Rangers (seventh seed) look to upset the Washington Capitals (second seed) in Game 7 at the Verizon Center. This was a series in which the Blueshirts led 3-1 but failed miserably in Game 5 and 6, leading to tonight’s do or die match up.

Tonight is also one of the main reasons why Rangers’ general manager Glen Sather signed Chris Drury back in the summer of 2007. Back then, Drury was known for coming up big in the playoffs and scoring goals/points when the team needed them the most. If there was ever a night for Chris Drury to be Chris Drury, tonight would certainly be that night.

Lundqvist Leads the Blueshirts to 3-1 Series Lead

Its been said by hockey pundits and experts that you need goaltending to win in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Case in point: Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers.

Thanks to Lundqvist’s 38 saves last night, the New York Rangers beat the Washington Capitals by a score of 2-1 in Game four to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. He was not only able to stop initial shot attempts, but he was also able to stop rebound attempts and frustrate the likes of Alex Ovechkin (who scored the Caps only goal), Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Mike Green.

Through four games in this series, Lundqvist has stopped an incredible 141 of 149 shots, good enough for a 2.00 goals against average, .946 save percentage and one shutout. Simply put, Lundqvist is the main reason why the Blueshirts are one victory away from eliminating the Capitals in the first round.

UGLY

Last night’s 4-0 loss in Game three to the Washington Capitals brought back memories of Tom Renney’s New York Rangers.

The team failed to score on the power play (what else is new?), failed to create quality scoring chances, left their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist out to dry and made Caps’ rookie netminder Simeon Varlamov look like the second coming of Patrick Roy. It was a game in which the Blueshirts had the chance to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. Instead, they have given the Caps’ some life and this could end up hurting the Blueshirts in the end.

It’s been said by many hockey pundits that special teams are crucial come playoff time. Well, the Rangers realize this when it comes to penalty killing but when it comes to power play, they do not seem to get the point. The team is still trying to look to make the perfect play more often than not and when they do get into prime scoring areas, they shoot the puck right into the goalie. What happened to the club that scored two power play goals in Game one?

Secondly, where was the defense? They allowed the Caps’ to fire at will (40 shots) on Lundqvist and many times, left Lundqvist all alone out there. What happened to the ‘d’ that tightened up for their goaltender and protected him when he needed it the most?

Third, captain Chris Drury should not be in the lineup. It’s obvious that he’s playing hurt and that the injury has something to do with his arm or wrist as he looks scared to shoot the puck, cannot take any face-offs and played the game with one hand on the stick.

Lastly, this team needs to start scoring goals. They were able to get four in Game one and then one early in the first period in Game two but since then, have been kept off the board. If you can;t score goals, you’re not going to win. It’s that simple.

Be back with more later, hopefully.
