Another Test for The Blueshirts
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/17/10 at 12:15 PM ET

The New York Rangers will face another tough test tonight at Madison Square Garden as the Boston Bruins are in town.
Earlier this season, the Blueshirts defeated the Bruins 3-2 in Boston thanks to a terrific performance from goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. However, Ranger fans must remember that Tuukka Rask was in goal, not the unbelievable Tim Thomas who has almost been unbeatable this season.
This will be a good opportunity for the Blueshirts to see if they can get Alex Frolov, Erik Christensen and Marian Gaborik and play like they did against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday afternoon.
The team will also need to get scoring from its supporting cast whether it’s Brian Boyle, Sean Avery, Derek Stepan, etc. Stepan needs to get back on the board because since scoring a hat trick in his first game as a Blueshirt, he’s been extremely quiet offensively.

Rangers Get it Done in Pittsburgh

Going into last night’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Consol Energy Center, New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist knew that he would have to be at his best.
He was just that last night for the Blueshirts who escaped Pittsburgh with a 3-2 overtime victory on a goal by Ryan Callahan off a great move and pass from Brandon Dubinsky. It was a game that would test the Rangers’ mettle and while not passing with straight A’s, they were able to pick up two points.
As I mentioned above, this game was all about Lundqvist. Lundqvist made 37 saves in stopping the likes of Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, and others. He was lass than three minutes away from a shutout until Chris Kunitz tied the game up at 1-1 and then Matt Cooke made it 2-1.

Gaborik Shines in Rangers’ Explosive Offensive Output Against the Oilers
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/14/10 at 06:43 PM ET
Comments (1)
While it was against a weak Edmonton Oilers hockey club, the New York Rangers flexed their scoring muscles in the name of Marian Gaborik in an 8-2 victory on home ice.
Gaborik had a hat trick and an assist in a game that was his coming out party for this season. Remember folks, this was really Gaborik’s fourth game of the season as he missed close to a month with a shoulder injury.
Two of Gaborik’s three goals came on breakaways where he made Oilers’ goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin look foolish. The first breakaway, he deked Khabibulin out of his pants and on the second breakaway, he ripped a shot past him to pick up his second hat trick as a Ranger.
His linemates, Alex Frolov (two goals and two assists for four points) and Erik Christensen (three assists) also had solid games for the Blueshirts in what was a dominating game. For Christensen, it was a huge game because he could potentially be the odd man out when injured captain Chris Drury comes back. However, if Christensen continues to play like he did this afternoon against the Oilers, he may make it hard for both head coach John Tortorella and general manager Glen Sather to send him down.

Biron Gets The Job Done
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/12/10 at 08:27 AM ET

In what was suppossed to be another start for New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, it turned out that Lundqvist came to Madison Square Garden feeling ill, forcing the Blueshirts to start back-up netminder Martin Biron in goal.
It turns out that Lundqvist being sick was a blessing in disguise as Biron played another solid game for his hockey club in helping them to a 3-2 overtime victory on home ice against one of his former team’s, the Buffalo Sabres.
Much like Henrik Lundqvist does on a nightly basis, Biron made the big saves when the team needed him the most and kept them in the hockey game, allowing the team to be able to create offensive chances of their own and win the hockey game.

Don’t Rely on Gaborik
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/11/10 at 10:00 AM ET
Comments (3)
New York Rangers forward Marian Gaborik will return to the lineup tonight for the first time since October 15th and will take on the Buffalo Sabres at Madison Square Garden.
The team’s offense has played pretty well without the offensive talent that is Gaborik but will certainly welcome him back into the fold with open arms. With that said, however, the team cannot rely on him to do everything and will need to do their part to contribute offensively.
The reason I am saying this is because when a superstar returns to any kind of team, that said team will more often that not slip back into old habits and rely on the superstar to pick them up and carry them on his shoulders. The Blueshirts simply cannot afford to do this with Gaborik.

Rangers Look To Keep Capitals’ Offense in Check
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/09/10 at 09:32 AM ET

Everyone knows what the Washington Capitals are going to come at you with: lots of offense, lots of shots, solid special teams and more often than not, two points at the end of the hockey game.
Tonight, the New York Rangers will try stymie the Caps’ offense at Madison Square Garden when the two clubs go at it at 7:30 p.m. For the Blueshirts, it’s going to take a huge team defensive effort to win this hockey game. They’ll have to do everything they can to allow their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to see the puckm force the Caps’ to shoot from the outside and not put themselves in a vulnerable position by taking penalties.
With that said, however, the team will also obviously need to put the puck in the net. As Blueshirts’ head coach John Tortorella pointed out on Sunday night after the team’s 2-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues, when opposing teams are able to stop the line of Brandon Dubinsky-Artem Anisimov-Ryan Callahan, then they could go on and win the hockey game.
As such, especially tonight, the team will need to come out firing on all cylinders and do everything they can to score the game’s first goal. If they are able to accomplish that, they’ll most likely go into defensive mode and focus on keeping the Caps’ at bay. Remember, the Caps’ boast offensive talents Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, Mike Green, John Carlson, and even Brooks Laich.

Rangers Singing the Blues

In what was supposed to be a game in which the New York Rangers took advantage of a team playing in back-to-back games, it was instead a 2-0 shutout loss to the St. Louis Blues at Madison Square Garden.
The Blueshirts looked very out-of-sync and one has to wonder if that was due to the shape of the Garden ice or to the team’s actual play. I would say it was a little bit of both as the puck was bouncing all over the place and the team had trouble getting the puck on their stick.
Unlike his first game at MSG, this loss cannot be blamed on back-up goaltender Martin Biron. Biron was strong between the pipes and did everything he could to give the team in front of him a chance to win the hockey game.
It must be said that guys like Derek Stepan, Derek Boogaard and Evegny Grachev did not play strong hockey games. Stepan looks snake bitten while Boogaard and Grachev look lost. It may be time to go back to the drawing board with these guys.

Biron makes Start Against the Blues

In what’s a curious coaching decision by New York Rangers’ head coach John Tortorella, the team will be going with Martin Biron in goal when they take on the St. Louis Blues at Madison Square Garden.
The only reason why I say it’s a curious decision is because Henrik Lundqvist is coming off a shutout against the New Jersey Devils on Friday night at the Prudential Center. At the same time, I guess Tortorella wants to stay the course with Biron and makes sure he gets playing time because if they end up making the playoffs come April, they are going to want a healthy Lundqvist between the pipes.
For the Blueshirts, tonight will be a good oppotunity to take advantage of a team that is coming off a shootout victory last night against the Boston Bruins. The Blues will certainly be tired so it will be important that the New York Rangers come out and take care of business at home, a place that they have not played well in this season.
It’s also important for the Rangers to start getting goals from someone other than Brandon Dubinsky. Yes, it’s great that Dubinsky is tied for first in goal scoring in the National Hockey League but it would be great of guys like Alexander Frolov, Sean Avery, Derek Stepan or Ruslan Fedotenko could put the puck in the net.

Rangers Getting It Done on the Road

For the longest time, the New York Rangers used to be a solid team at home in Madison Square Garden.
This year, the story has been quite different as the team extended its record to 5-2 after shutting out the New Jersey Devils by a score of 3-0 at the Prudential Center.
For the Blueshirts, it was quite simple. Throw pucks to the net, finish your checks, block shots, let Henrik Lundqvist see the puck and play disciplined. When the Rangers are able to do that consistently, they are usually able to pick up two points.
Brandon Dubinsky had another great game for his hockey club as he picked up two goals, giving him 10 goals in 14 games. Believe it or not folks, that’s good enough to be tied for first in the NHL with Tampa Bay Lightning sniper Steven Stamkos and Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp.

Ugly Game for the Blueshirts
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/05/10 at 10:00 AM ET

Thus far in the early going, it’d be fair to say that the Rangers have taken advantage of struggling hockey clubs such as the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils. The wins against these teams account for four of the club’s six wins.
I’m not saying that the wins were not well deserved but looking at last night’s game, it’s apparent that the Blueshirts had trouble with stiffer competition in the Broadstreet Bullies.
For the Rangers, it was an ugly hockey game. Even head coach John Tortorella agreed with my sentiment when talking to reporters after the game:
“It was just one of those games where you get all this hype about it and to me it was a (ugly) game,” said Rangers head coach John Tortorella. “I’m sure they don’t feel that way, they win it 4-1, but to me it was sloppy offensively. They didn’t have that many chances either.”

Looking for Payback in Philly
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/04/10 at 01:24 PM ET

Every New York Ranger fan remembers last April and not for a good reason.
Last April, the Philadelphia Flyers eliminated the Blueshirts from the playoffs by defeating them in a shootout. And yes, Olli Jokinen was the last Ranger to shoot.
Things are much different this time around as not only is Jokinen gone, but the Rangers have yet to play in a shootout this season as the team is getting timely goal scoring.
If the Rangers want to win this game, somebody other than Artem Anisimov, Ryan Callahan, and Brandon Dubinsky will have to put the puck in the net. It’d be great to have someone like Alex Frolov start scoring consistently because if he can get going, this offense may take off.

Callahan and Dubinsky: True Blue Rangers

In what was a nail biter at Madison Square Garden last night, the New York Rangers defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks by a score of 3-2.
When talking about this game, besides goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of course, there are two key players to talk about: Ryan Callahan dna Brandon Dubinsky.
In last night’s tilt, Callahan picked up two assists and also blocked a few shots, threw several hits, killed penalties, played on the power play and more. He did everything for the Blueshirts.
He reminds me a bit of Adam Graves because like Graves did when he was a Blueshirt, Callahan never takes a shift off. He hustles, he goes to the net, he deflects shots, he pokes at rebounds, blocks shots, kills penalties, and more. He wears that Ranger jersey with pride and I hope that others will follow him.

Blueshirts Take on Defending Champs
by Patrick Hoffman on 11/01/10 at 02:52 PM ET

The New York Rangers need to start establishing some consistency on home ice.
A win tonight against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks would do do the trick as the Blueshirts look to win their second straight game after shutting out the Toronto Maple Leafs at the ACC on Saturday night.
To do, the team will once again need to block a lot of shots, take away the shooting lanes, pick up the man in front and cover the points because if they don’t, the Blackhawks’ offensive and defensive guns will surely make them pay.
The team will also need to get more scoring from guys other than Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan and Artem Anisimov. As I’ve mentioned many times before, this has been the club’s top line and while it’s great to have them contributing a lot, the team needs more production from its other lines.

Rangers’ Shut Out Leafs
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/30/10 at 09:56 PM ET

As I mentioned in my previous blog, the New York Rangers needed to go out and play a perfect road game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Mission accomplished as the Blueshirts shutout the Leafs 2-0 thanks to terrific performances from the likes of Henrik Lundqvist (36 saves), Ryan Callahan (penalty shot goal), and Brian Boyle (1 goal). and Bradon Prust.
What else is left to say about Lundqvist? He played great last night in a losing effort and tonight, he absolutely shut the door on the Leafs, especially in the second and third periods when the Leafs had sustained pressure in the Blueshirts’ zone. Yes, he allowed four goals last night but ever since making the start in Boston a week ago, Henrik has been on top of his game.
Ryan Callahan has also been terrific for the Blueshirts. With his penalty shot goal tonight, Cally now has 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points in 10 games. Not only is he contributing offensively, but he also throws a lot of hits, blocks a lot of shots and creates plenty of scoring opportunities.

Tough Loss Despite Great Effort From Team’s Top Line
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/30/10 at 06:06 PM ET

The New York Rangers played a solid enough home game last night to win.
Unfortunately, they came up short in losing the Carolina Hurricanes by a score of 4-3, despite taking 43 shots and Hurricanes’ netminder Cam Ward.
The team got a terrific performance out of the Brandon Dubinsky (1 G, 1A), Ryan Callahan (1G, 1A), and Artem Anisimov (1A) line. Both Dubinsky and Callahan scored goals while Anisimov showed great support by going after the puck, taking hits, getting the pukc to his linemates and putting himself in good scoring position to create opportunities.
This continues to be the top line for the Blueshirts and it shows by how much head coach John Tortorella is putting them out there. The head coach said the following to team web site beat writer Jim Cerny after the game:
“They continue to be our best and most consistent line night after night,” Rangers head coach John Tortorella said. “I liked a lot of what I saw from our team (Friday) night. There are things we have to fix, but there are a lot of good things there.”

Predictable
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/28/10 at 04:24 PM ET

Simply put, the New York Rangers’ 6-4 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers was very predictable.
Prior to last night’s tough loss, the Blueshirts had won three straight games and did so by playing smart, getting good goaltending and timely scoring. A pretty simple formula for success in hockey if you ask me.
Last night, however, the team did not do any of the above and it cost them. They do this year in and year out and last season, it was one of the reasons the team did not make the playoffs.
Yes, the Blueshirts were able to score four goals but they did not get the timely saves from Martin Biron and the team’s overall effort was too little too late as time ran out on them in the third period after they cut the Thrashers’ 5-2 lead to 5-4.

Rangers to Battle The Thrashers Tonight
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/27/10 at 01:08 PM ET

Tonight at Madison Square Garden, the New York Rangers take on the Atlanta Thrashers in what will be a good test for the Blueshirts to see if they can keep up the consistency they’ve displayed in their last three games.
The Blueshirts will once again be looking to the likes of Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Ryan Callahan, Sean Avery, Ruslan Fedotenko and others to provide offense while relying on the team’s defensive corps to do their job. Considering the way things have gone the last three games, it’s safe to say that these folks will do their part.
The question, however, remains who will be in goal tonight for the Blueshirts? It’s easy to see that Henrik Lundqvist is on somewhat of a roll after his excellent play this weekend against the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. With that said, however, it’d be easy to use back-up goaltender Martin Biron in a game like this and save Lundqvist for Friday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Over at RLD Hockey today, I talked about how the New York Rangers have turned it around after somewhat of a sluggish start.
I would like to share with you what I wrote since this concerns the Blueshirts:
After a sluggish start that saw the team beat the Sabres 6-3 in the opener and then lose their next three, the New York Rangers have turned it around with three straight wins to propel their record to 4-2-1.
Prior to this current streak, the team’s defense was extremely porous. They allowed 16 goals in the first four games, including six to the rival Islanders. That’s not what Rangers fans are used to seeing from their team.

Look out folks but after defeating the New Jersey Devils last night 3-1 at Madison Square Garden, the team is now 4-2-1 and has won three straight games.
I know it’s early in the season but six points is six points and as you know, every point is important in the National Hockey League. Last night against the Devils, the team earned two points by playing a smart game at home, throwing pucks on net (34 shots), and getting great goaltending once again from Henrik Lundqvist, who made 27 saves to pick up his second straight victory.
The team got a tremendous effort out of the Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky (1 goal and 1 assist for 2 points) and Ryan Callahan (1 goal) line. The line drove hard to the net, kept the puck in the opponent’s zone for stretches at a time and scored two of the team’s three goals.
When looking at this game, you also need to give credit to the club;s defense. Michal Rozsival played another great game and Michael Del Zotto had a team high 28:38 in ice time with hits, 4 shots, and was also a + 2.

Rangers Look to Extend Winning Streak to Three tonight

Last night was a great example of a perfect road hockey game displayed by the New York Rangers.
They got two quick goals from Artem Anisimov and Alexander Frolov and an insurance goal by Marc Staal in the second period to defeat the Boston Bruins by a score of 3-2. With that said, the win would not have been possible if not for the play of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.
Lundqvist made 35 saves on the night and did everything he could to make sure that his hockey club came out of the game with two points rather than one. This was a game where Lundqvist put it all together and finally had the support in front of him to be able to do so.
For the Blueshirts, it’s two straight tough road wins against formidable opponents and in this league, we all know that every two points matters.

A Quick E-mail Interview with Brian Monzo of WFAN and NHL Live
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/22/10 at 02:33 PM ET

Brian Monzo was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule of working at WFAN and NHL Live to discuss all things New York Rangers with us.
He really has a fresh and positive outlook! Make sure to follow Monzo on Twitter at BMonzoNHL660.
PH: Besides the injuries to Marian Gaborik, Chris Drury and Vinny Prospal, why are the Blueshirts struggling so much?
BM: I don’t think they are struggling, in the sense of playing bad in a midseason stretch. The team is still coming together. I think you will see a lot of tight games. The one area that needs immediate attention is special teams. Killing 75% of penalities isn’t going to get it done. But once Drury comes back, and Lundqvist gets into a groove, you will see that number hit 83/84 percent. That still isn’t dominant, but will get you into the top 15.
PH: Why do you think the team’s defense is allowing close to 35 shots a game? -What can they do to improve on that?
BM: They are still very young. Marc Staal, Michael Del Zotto, Matt Gilroy and Mike Sauer are all still growing. That will lead to some defensive breakdowns. Also, they have a taken a lot of penalties. On a good note—a lot of shots have been taken from the outside and haven’t been high quality chances. The Kris Versteeg breakaway, which Marty Biron stopped, was a rare thing it seemed.

Should Biron Start Tomorrow Night in Boston?
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/22/10 at 09:57 AM ET

With the New York Rangers defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 last night at the ACC, one has to wonder if Blueshirts’ head coach will turn to backup goaltender Martin Biron for tomorrow night’s tilt in Boston.
Biron made 24 saves last night in earning his first victory as a Ranger. He stood tall, controlled his rebounds and more importantly, got his team a much needed victory without getting a ton of offensive support.
While the Boston Bruins are off to a good start in the early going (4-1), that is no reason for Tortorella not to give the net back to Biron. Yes, Lundqvist has played well in Beantown but right now, it’s about getting Biron acclimated to this hockey club.

Who’s the Boss?
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/21/10 at 09:37 AM ET

According to New York Rangers’ beat writer Jesse Spector of the Daily News, it appears that team general manager Glen Sather and team head coach John Tortorella have a difference of opinion when it comes to the roster.
This is not hard to believe given that this is Sather we are talking about. He has not changed much when it comes to the way he has gone about business and building a hockey team. While it’s hard to understand, you cannot fault him for being that way.
However, the team head coach should be able to have control of who he puts on the ice, considering he is the closest to the action game in and game out.
The Rangers (1-2-1) face the Maple Leafs Thursday night in Toronto with no reinforcements from Hartford of the AHL to fill in for Chris Drury and Marian Gaborik, who were injured in the Rangers’ overtime loss to the Leafs on Friday at the Garden.
“It’s not my call,” Tortorella said after the Rangers lost to Colorado on Monday at the Garden. “I haven’t even talked to Glen about that. We’re going to have to reassess it. We’ll reassess it and see where we go.”

Not Good

This is not the kind of effort you want your team to give when you’re missing two of your better players.
For the New York Rangers, this effort caused the team to lose to the Colorado Avalanche by a score of 3-1. It’s even a surprise that the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of two periods.
What’s alarming is that the team’s defense continues to be porous as they allowed 34 shots tonight. While Henrik Lundqvist is a world-class goaltender, letting him face close to 35 shots a night and not supporting him with enough defense or scoring could wear on him pretty quickly.
It’s also alarming that the team’s penalty kil continues to struggle as Avs’ forward Chris Stewart had 2 power play goals tonight. Since the team is missing their top penalty killer in Chris Drury, the rest of the penalty killing unit (s) is going to have to step up. Not only that, but the team needs to play with a bit more discipline and learn to stay out of the box.

The Hockey Maven Knows what The Blueshirts Need to Do
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/18/10 at 10:47 AM ET

Yesterday evening over at the MSG Network web site, the “Hockey Maven”, Stan Fischler, blogged about what the New York Rangers need to do to win some hockey games:
The grit guys, who can score—especially Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky—must ratchet up their games and it wouldn’t hurt if Avery, whose offense IS there, lights a few red lamps. Ditto for Brandon Prust.
The Hockey Maven is absolutely right, especially when it comes to someone like Ryan Callahan. While Callahan is terrific at blocking shots, killing penalties, going into the corners and taking the body, he’d be even better if he could start contributing more offensively.

Without Gaborik and Drury, Who Will Step Up for the Blueshirts?
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/17/10 at 07:10 PM ET
Comments (1)
After losing both Chris Drury and Marian Gaborik to injury in Friday night’s home opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs, I pondered over at RLD Hockey which New York Rangers’ players would step up and provide offense and all-around solid play in their absence.
I will now share it with you:
Normally, home openers in the National Hockey League are suppossed to be ones where the home team comes out on top by playing a terrific brand of hockey.
Unfortunately for the New York Rangers on Friday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the home opener was anything but that. The team not only lost to the Leafs 4-3 in overtime, but also ended up losing forwards Marian Gaborik (seperated shoulder, 2-4 weeks) and Chris Drury (broken finger, 6 weeks) for extended periods of time.
While team captain Drury brings hard work, a super shot blocking ability and a timely goal here and there, it is the loss of Gaborik’s offense, particularly his goal-scoring, that will hurt the Rangers the most.

Uh Oh

Not only did the New York Rangers lose their home opener in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs by a score of 4-3, but they also lost Chris Drury (6 weeks due to a broken finger) and Marian Gaborik (2-3 weeks with a separated shoulder) to injuries.
The Blueshirts lost Gaborik after Leafs’ winger Colby Armstrong hit Gaborik hard into the boards. Not too long after that happened, the team lost Drury when he broke his finger again. Not exactly the way to start the season at home, eh?
What’s concerning here is the loss of Gaborik for a few weeks. Coming into the season, Gaborik was expected to pile up the points like he did last season and be a scoring threat on a line with Alex Frolov, who has yet to score a goal in the team’s first three games.
Where is the offense going to come from? There are not going to be too many games where your club’s goal scorers are Michal Rozsival and team fourth-liner Brian Boyle.
For the next few weeks at least, others are going to have to step up, especially in the month of October since November looks like it is going to be one of the toughest months for the team.

Playing with Pride at Home

Last week over at RLD Hockey, I blogged about how the New York Rangers need to take pride in the fact that this season mark’s the club’s 85th Anniversary and that to honor it, they need to play with pride all season long.
I figured that since tomorrow night is the team’s home opener at Madison Square Garden, I would share with you some of what I blogged over at RLD Hockey that is relevant for tomorrow night and going forward in 2010-11:
- The New York Rangers are one of the Original Six franchises in the National Hockey League, which is something that the team should take pride in. This season marks the 85th Anniversary for the Blueshirts; and in order to make it a good one, the team needs to make things happen and get off to a good start.

Captain Drury to be on top line in Home Opener?
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/13/10 at 03:14 PM ET
Comments (0)
According to Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants, there’s a good chance that on Friday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the team’s home opener, New York Rangers’ team captain Chris Drury will be put on the first line with Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov.
Gross reported the following in his blog today:
Coach John Tortorella has confirmed that captain Chris Drury will return to the lineup for Friday’s home opener against the Maple Leafs. He’s not ready to say where Drury might fit into the lineup and answered it was still a possibility Drury could play wing.
However….
Tortorella also said Artem Anisimov’s line with Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan was the team’s best during Monday’s 6-4 loss to the Islanders and that Derek Stepan’s line with Sean Avery and Ruslan Fedotenko was not far behind. Therefore, Tortorella said he’s not inclined to tinker with those two lines. If that’s indeed the case, Drury would seem ticketed for the top line since nobody on the Derek Boogaard-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust line is likely to fill a top-line role.

Not Pretty

The title explains everything about the New York Rangers 6-4 loss to the New York Islanders yesterday afternoon at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The team’s defense was sloppy, the team took undisciplined penalties at crucial points in the game and lastly, they gave away two points that they should have had.
Yes, it’s early on in the season and there is plenty of time to work on these kinds of mistakes but the fact they happened against their rivals in inexcusable.
What’s also inexcusable was the play of the team’s defense. Michael Del Zotto had a tough game and Steve Eminger was often out of position to make the necessary defensive plays to help the team.

Drury to Return on Friday Night for Home Opener?
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/11/10 at 12:00 PM ET

It appears that New York Rangers’ team captain Chris Drury has a good chance of returning to the Blueshirts on Friday night when the team takes on the Toronto Maple Leafs in their home opener.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports the following:
It’s beginning to sound as if Chris Drury, sidelined since Sept. 20 with a broken left index finger, will be available for the Rangers’ home opener Friday night against the Maple Leafs.
“Friday is in sight; Friday is in sight,” head coach John Tortorella, hardly given to hyperbole, said at the Coliseum before this afternoon’s match against the Islanders. “We’ll see how it goes the next few days and take it from there.”

Stepan Proves Worth Early On
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/10/10 at 10:26 AM ET

Throughout the pre-season, many Ranger fans and beat writers were clamoring for prospect Derek Stepan to make the team after his performance in training camp and pre-season games.
Together, they were right for wanting him to make the team because in his first NHL game last night against the Buffalo Sabres, Stepan recorded a hat trick in leading the Blueshirts to a 6-3 victory.
Yes, it is very easy to get excited early on in the season when things go right but may be this time, there is a reason for that excitement. Stepan is proving to the team, its fans and the organization that kids are all right.
Not only did Stepan score a hat trick for the Blueshirts, but another one of the team’s youngsters, Brandon Dubinsky, picked up two goals.
After the game, both head coach John Tortorella and Dubinsky had nothing but postive things to say about the 20-year old Stepan.

Lundqvist is the Face of The Blueshirts
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/08/10 at 03:47 PM ET

Ever since bursting onto the Broadway scene during the 2005-06 season, New York Rangers’ netminder Henrik Lundqvist has become the face of the franchise.
The “King” works hard on and off the ice, keeps the team in every single game, is extremely consistent and not only that, but he devotes some of his time to giving back to the community.
As such, this is someone you want as the face of your franchise heading into your 85th Anniversary season, which begins tomorrow night when the Blueshirts visit Buffalo to take on the Sabres.
In an article in the New York Post, Lundqvist displays his positive attitude by saying he wants more and that what he’d really like to do is win a Stanley Cup with the Blueshirts.

Expectations for Derek Boogaard
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/06/10 at 10:17 AM ET

When the New York Rangers signed Derek Boogaard during the off-season, many eye brows were raised by both fans and hockey pundits alike.
Together, they wondered things such as: “Why does the team need this fighter?”, “How else can he help the team besides fighting?”, “What kind of offense, if any, will he be able to contribute?”. People have a right to ask these questions given Boogaard’s history.
Today, Jesse Spector (Rangers’ team beat writer) of the Daily News wrote about how Blueshirts’ head coach John Tortorella expects a lot more out of Boogaard than just fisticuffs:
“I’m not sure how he was treated in Minnesota - if he was just told to go out and fight - that’s not what we’re looking for here,” said the coach. “He’ll have his opportunities to do that, but we also want to try to help him become a better player and help us by adding some minutes to our lineup.”

What To Make of Tim Kennedy and Todd White
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/05/10 at 06:57 PM ET
Comments (1)
As told to Rangers’ reporters today, Todd White and Tim Kennedy were placed on waivers today.
This was somewhat of a surprise given the positive things that were said about him throughout training camp and pre-season. However, after watching him closely in pre-season, it would seem that Kennedy was easy to knock off the puck.
I’m not saying that he didn’t work hard because believe me he did. He hustles, he hits and he has a tremendous amount of speed. With that said, however, he just wasn’t what the Blueshirts were looking for.
Rangers’ head coach John Tortorella said the following about Kennedy:
“As far as his camp went, it faded a little bit at the end, but he has some good talent and he’s a good kid,” Tortorella said of Kennedy today. “I thought he did some good things with us, as camp went on.”

Stepan Cracks Blueshirts Roster
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/05/10 at 11:37 AM ET

It appears that the New York Rangers’ brass has listened to me regarding Derek Stepan and how he should at least start the season with the Blueshirts.
Jesse Spector at the Daily News reported the following:
“It could be just until injuries get cleared up and stuff like that,” Stepan said of his job with the Rangers. “But right now I’ve just got to enjoy it and not try to think about stuff like that.”
The Rangers are waiting for one center, Chris Drury, to return from a broken finger. Meanwhile, Vinny Prospal, who could have been the center on the top line with Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov, won’t skate again until at least mid-October due to knee inflammation.

Fedotenko Earns His Keep
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/04/10 at 01:25 PM ET

After his great play during the pre-season, Rusland Fedotenko has earned a spot on the New York Rangers’ roster for the 2010-11 season.
Here is part of the press release from the organization:
Fedotenko, 31, skated in five pre-season contests with the Rangers, registering one goal and six assists for seven points, along with two penalty minutes and a plus-five rating. Fedotenko led the team in assists, points and plus/minus rating, and tied for second on the club with 11 shots. His six assists are also tied for sixth in the league, while his seven points are tied for 11th in the NHL.
Fedotenko is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, having helped Tampa Bay capture the title in 2003-04 and Pittsburgh in 2008-09. He established a post-season career-high with 12 goals during the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and tied for second in the NHL in goals and game-winning goals (three), and ninth in the league with 14 points in 22 playoff contests.

Prospal Injury more Long-Term?
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/04/10 at 11:10 AM ET

This might not be the way to start out the season as Larry Brooks, the New York Rangers beat writer for the New York Post, reported the following:
Meanwhile, a well-placed source has told The Post that there’s little reason for optimism that the condition of Vinny Prospal’s right knee will improve following his enforced two-week rest period. Indeed, we’re told it would be no surprise at all should the 35-year-old require surgery that would likely end his season, if not his career.
Let’s hope that this isn’t the case because although older, Prospal proved last season that he can still contribute on both sides of the puck.
However, if he is indeed going to be out for awhile, I think it’s time for the team to finally embrace the young prospects they have in their system and give them a chance to show the organization that they can play in the National Hockey League.

Stepan Deserves a Shot
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/04/10 at 08:30 AM ET

I know that posting a lot of points in the NHL pre-season is no thing to brag about.
However, with that said, five points for an NHL prospect is something that merits notice as well as consideration to make an NHL roster.
If you’re a New York Rangers fan, thank you know what player I am talking about - Derek Stepan.
Since coming to training camp in September, all Stepan has done has impressed members of the organization from management, to coaches, players and its fans. In the pre-season, Stepan had 3 goals, 2 assists, worked his tail off in each game and showed that he could play with the likes of Marian Gaborik, Alex Frolov, Sean Avery and Ruslan Fedotenko.
Yesterday, the team sent defensemen Ryan McDonagh (somewhat surprising) and Pavel Valentenko along with forwards Dale Weise and Mats Zuccarello as the roster is now down to 25 players.

Good evening folks. Sorry for not posting anything this weekend but I was in Massachusetts for alumni weekend at my college.
While I was away, it seems liked I missed quite the pre-season game last night between the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators. I know the Blueshirts suffered an 8-5 loss but it’s nice that at least during the pre-season, the team scored some goals.
The question, however, is will they be able to score goals once the regular season begins next Saturday night against the Buffalo Sabres? Only time will tell but until then, it appears that both head coach John Tortorella and general manager Glen Sather have some tough decisions to make when it comes to selecting the team’s roster, something I am sure I will be writing about this week as the start of the regular season gets closer and closer.
Thanks for understanding and I look forward to bringing you the best Rangers’ coverage I can during the season. If there is anything that you would like me to do to make the blog better, please do not hesitate to tell me by either leaving me a comment or dropping me an e-mail at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Rangers Take on Sens Tonight at The Garden
by Patrick Hoffman on 10/01/10 at 08:35 AM ET

The New York Rangers will finish up it’s last games of the pre-season over the next couple of days. They’ll take on the Senators tonight at Madison Square Garden and then again tomorrow night in Ottawa before preparing for next season’s regular season opening game in Buffalo next Friday night.
It appears that Henrik Lundqvist will get the full game between the pipes tonight for the Blueshirts while according to Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants, back-up netminder Martin Biron will more than likely get the full game in Ottawa tomorrow night.
Tonight’s pre-season tilt marks the return of Blushirts’ forward Vinny Prospal, who was the club’s second leading scorer last season with 58 points. Steve Eminger, who is in NY on a try-out contract with the Blueshirts, has only played one pre-season game due to a sore grain but will be in the lineup tonight.

Frolov and Fedotenko Getting the Job Done in Pre-Season
by Patrick Hoffman on 09/30/10 at 03:00 PM ET

When the New York Rangers signed Alex Frolov during the off-season, many pundits and fans wondered if Frolov would be a Nikolai Zherdev-type player.
In pre-season at least, this has not been the case. Frolov is tied for the team lead with five points (1 goal and 4 assists) thus far during pre-season. He has contribtued offensively, has gotten back on defense, has played on the power play and is working extremely hard to prove to the organization and its fans that the signing was not a mistake.
For Frolov, it’s all about consistency. Sure, he’s scoring in the pre-season but will he be able to do it during the regular season? If he goes into it like he’s doing right now, this may turn out to be a great signing for Sather. Surprised, right?

If you’re a New York Rangers’ fan that has attended games at Madison Square Garden, then you surely know or are well aware of who “Dancing Larry” is. If not, just click here and may be it will spark your memory.
Larry was kind enough to take time out of his Rangers’ dancing schedule to do a short e-mail interview with us discussing how he got into hockey, supporting the Rangers and more.
PH: How did you get into hockey?
DL: I had a lot of friends that were into hockey so I started watching with them and really got into it. The funny thing is my whole family were always baseball and football fans.
PH: How did you become a New York Rangers fan?
DL: The Rangers were the first hockey game I ever watched. I loved it!

Blueshirts Trim Roster

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:
Of the players sent to Hartford, forwards Dane Byers, Kris Newbury and Jeremy Williams all must pass through waivers.
To Hartford:
G: Chad Johnson
D: Wade Redden
F: Dane Byers, Evgeny Grachev, Kris Newbury, Dale Weise, Jeremy Williams, Mats ZuccarelloReleased from tryouts:
D: Garnet Exelby, Brandon Manning, Alexei Semenov
I thought the team would give Mats Zuccarello a few more pre-season games to strut his stuff. With that said, however, it appears that Zuccarello was bound for Hartford no matter what.

Avery Playing the Way He Should Play All Season Long
by Patrick Hoffman on 09/26/10 at 07:50 PM ET

After watching last night’s pre-season game between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils, it is clear that Sean Avery is on his game.
He’s battling hard, going after the puck, being a pain in the behind and generating a lot of scoring chances. So far tonight against the Detroit Red Winds, he’s doing all the same things but has a goal to show for it.
This is a Sean Avery that Rangers’ head coach John Tortorella can live with. It’s the dumb penalties, mouthing off to the referees or becoming a distraction to the team that Torts cannot deal with.
That is where the fine line for Sean Avery is and one that will be watched closely all season long by Tortorella. In fact, it is more than likely that Torts will use that line to determine how much playing time he gets in a given game.
Believe me, I know that many fans out there hate Avery. It’s completely understandable because he’s a pest and does everything he can to get under your skin.

Welcome News to Rangers Fans
by Patrick Hoffman on 09/25/10 at 11:32 AM ET

As Paul linked to earlier on the blog, Jesse Spector at the Daily News’ Rangers’ blog reports that defenseman Wade Redden will be placed on waivers:
Sather said that Redden did not seem too surprised when he got the news, that “he’d seen the writing on the wall.” The Rangers’ president and general manager said that he would accept whatever decision Redden makes should he clear waivers, whether the 33-year-old defenseman chooses to accept an assignment to Hartford or tries to find a job in Europe.
This will certainly be welcome news to Blueshirt fans everywhere as Redden simply did not work out on Broadway. He gave up the puck many times, did not contribute much offensively or defensively and rather than help goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, he was a liability.
Ranger fans will also welcome the fact that Glen Sather finally admitted that he made a mistake by signing Redden to that ridiculous contract back during the summer of 2008.
Hopefully, this was a learning experience for Sather and that in the future, he will not make the same mistake.

Good Start To Pre-season

Good morning folks. Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the New York Rangers vs. New Jersey Devils pre-season game last night because I had a hockey game of my own to play in.
However, it was nice to come home and see that they won 4-3 in overtime and apparently got strong efforts from Marian Gaborik and Alexander Frolov, a combination that team head coach John Tortorella will more than likely have play together to start the season.
Gaborik finished the night with two goals, including the overtime winner, while his linemate, Frolov, finished with a goal and two assists. Certainly not a bad start for what could be a dynamic duo for the Blueshirts.
The team also got a solid effort from prospect Derek Stepan, who is doing everything he can to show the team that he belongs there as team web site beat writer Jim Cerny reported the following in his game recap last night:
Stepan logged over 18 minutes of ice-time, playing on both specialty teams as well as at even strength. He won 50 percent of his faceoffs and fired four shots on goal, just behind Frolov and Ruslan Fedotenko, who each had six, for the team lead.

Blueshirts Looking Towards Tomorrow Night
by Patrick Hoffman on 09/22/10 at 03:32 PM ET

Well wouldn’t ya know it? The New York Rangers will be back in action tomorrow night in their first pre-season game against the New Jersey Devils.
While the pre-season doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, it is a good chance for the team and its fans to see how players have either progressed or not improved, get a look at some potential lines and more importantly, it’s a great opportunity to see some hockey again since the Blueshirts haven’t played since losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in a shootout back on April 11.
According to Jesse Spector of the Daily News, Blueshirts prospect Mats Zuccarello is expected to make his Madison Square Garden debut tomorrow night against the Devils. It also sounds like Zuccarello is primed and ready to make an impression:
“On the first day, I felt like it was tough, and I wasn’t used to this stuff,” Zuccarello said. “After the first day, I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve done. I think the scrimmages have gone well. I’ve had some good passes, made some good plays. It will be nice to play a game.”
