Time to Get Back on Track

The New York Rangers will look to get back on the winning side of things tonight when they take on the Phoenix Coyotes at Madison Square Garden.

The team has dropped three straight games to the San Jose Sharks (last Monday), New Jersey Devils (last Thursday) and the Montreal Canadiens (two nights ago). They jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead last Monday night against the Sharks only to see poor goaltending, defensive positioning and ill-timed penalties seal their fate. They were able to come back from a 2-0 deficit against the Devils only to see an unlucky bounce get past goaltender Henrik Lundqvist in a 4-2 loss. The team blew a lead against the Habs and lost 5-4 in OT thanks to a Mike Camalleri hat trick.

Tonight’s game should not be considered an easy one for the Blueshirts as the Desert Dogs are currently 6-3-0 in nine games. Normally, this would be the kind of game that backup netminder Steve Valiquette would start but given the way things have gone in the past week, it’s time for Lundqvist to right the ship and help out his hockey club by getting a win tonight on home ice.

Not a Lack of Feel Bad Stories in Hockey

With recent hockey talk surrounding the issues of the Phoenix Coyotes and the NHLPA, Stu Hackel of The New York Times Slapshot blog dug into all of them today on his blog:

Always nice to have these feel-good stories around…because hockey certainly doesn’t lack for the feel-bad ones.

Jim Kelley of SportsIllustrated.com surveyed the N.H.L.’s big picture late last week and — between the Phoenix bankruptcy creature and all its related tentacles to N.H.L.P.A.’s beheading of Executive Director Paul Kelly — he wrote, “The league seems constantly engaged in a series of epic, insane battles.” And Kelley added to that series one that has not gotten nearly the same amount of attention — Steven Walkom’s resignation as the league’s director of officiating (a position that was filled on Tuesday by the hiring of Terry Gregson). It’s the most overlooked story of the summer.

Survey: Canada Supports Seventh NHL Team

From the Canadian Press via TSN.ca:

A new poll suggests almost two-thirds of Canadians believe Canada could support a seventh NHL team, but most doubt Jim Balsillie’s attempt to bring the Phoenix Coyotes to Southern Ontario will succeed.

Nationally, 63 per cent of respondents to The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey said another NHL team could thrive in Canada, while 19 per cent disagreed.

The confidence was widespread—77 per cent of respondents in Alberta, 73 per cent in British Columbia and 66 per cent in Ontario thought Canadians could support another NHL franchise.

But most respondents also said the Blackberry wizard’s attempt to buy the bankrupt Coyotes won’t fly.

Overall, 41 per cent said it was unlikely Balsillie’s bid, now before a U.S. court, would succeed, while one in three (34 per cent) said it was likely Balsillie would be successful.

What do you folks think of this?

Records can be Deceiving

With a record of 17-8-2 and sitting first in the Eastern Conference, one would have to think that the team and its fans would be happy.

In the case of the New York Rangers, not so much. Looks can be deceiving folks and yesterday afternoon’s 4-0 clunker at the hands of the Florida Panthers proves that point.

Over at Sam Weinman’s (The Journal News) Rangers Report Blog, MSG’s John Giannone points out that of the club’s 17 wins, six have come in the shootout. If there were no shootouts, the team would have a substantially lower record and would be 11-7-8.

Officially a Losing Streak

While they may have only dropped their last two games, the New York Rangers played like they were in the midst of a two-week slump in a 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators this afternoon.

They had no jump in their legs, didn’t get pucks to the net, had trouble getting the puck out of their own zone and looked generally disorganized for 60 minutes.

So my question is: What’s going on?
