Update from the Rangers Morning Skate

No real update on Sean Avery yet. He left the ice and went to have his right knee examined and tested by the Rangers assistant team doctor, Dr. Anthony Maddalo. Avery was to have played tonight. Instead, Aaron Voros will take his place on Artem Anisimov’s left wing along with Ryan Callahan.
And now that Marian Gaborik is in tonight’s lineup against the Red Wings - his first preseason game after experiencing tightness in his groin prior to training camp - Gaborik said he wants to stay in the lineup for the rest of the preseason schedule (Thursday vs. Capitals and Sunday at Washington).
Gaborik will skate on Vinny Prospal’s right wing with Christopher Higgins.

A Better Recap of the Rangers’ Pre-Season Loss to the Wings

For the second game out of three preseason contests, Rangers head coach John Tortorella placed three young Russians—Artem Anisimov, Evgeny Grachev, and Enver Lisin—on the same line, and with positive results. After that threesome showed good chemistry in Tuesday’s match against the Bruins, they combined for two goals and four points in Friday’s contest.
Anisimov, the 21-year-old center who recorded 81 points at Hartford a year ago, notched a goal and an assist to lead the team on Friday. He opened the scoring 7:26 into the first period by whipping a 35-foot shot past Chris Osgood after quickly shifting the puck to his forehand from his backhand.
While that play showed his skill, Anisimov also showed his smarts to help the Rangers grab a 2-0 lead at 3:39 of the second period. Anisimov deftly stepped up to challenge an unaware Red Wings defenseman at the Detroit blueline, causing a turnover.
Although Anisimov fell to the ice after taking the puck away, the 19-year-old Grachev scooted forward to collect it. Grachev powered his way to the net, and sent a hard backhand shot towards the goal that was denied by Osgood. Lisin, though, was able to follow the play and nudge the puck over the goal line for his first goal of the preseason.

Another Pre-Season Loss

I would imagine that plenty of you Blueshirt fans out there are complaining that the team has not won a game in pre-season. With their 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings tonight, the New York Rangers are now 0-3.
One negative that one can easily point out is the team’s third period performance, when they allowed four goals, three of them coming in an eight-minute span. Blueshirt netminder Matt Zaba did everything he could stopping 15 of 19 shots but the Wings’ proved to be too much.
On the positive side, the Rangers got solid games from Artem Anisimov, Enver Lisin and Henrik Lundqvist, three players that many Ranger fans hope have successful seasons this year during the regular season.

Tortorella was asked after the skate about the quick demotion to the Hartford camp for Michael Sauer. “He was disappointed,” Tortorella said. “We have (Matt) Gilroy here, we have (Michael) Del Zotto, I haven’t seen Sanguinetti yet… We’re going to shuffle the deck at the defensive position until we find the final 6 or 7 guys.”
Tortorella also had praise for Paul Crowder, who could benefit from Brandon Dubinsky’s holdout. “We just want to take at him some more,” Tortorella said.
Click here for more. I’m definitely intrigued to see how the team’s line of Higgins, Drury and Callahan will look and also the Grachev, Anisimov and Lisin line. Let’s hope we see some offense come out of these lines.
