Quiet on the Rangers’ Front

With the New York Rangers out of the Stanley Cup playoffs, it’s obviously easy to shift one’s attention to the rest of the hockey world and focus on the other teams still competing for hockey’s holy grail. How could one not with three Game 7’s on tap within the next two days?!
With that said, there is still some Rangers’ Reading, although minor, that you should check out:

Naslund Supplies Breathing Room to Blueshirts
by Patrick Hoffman on 05/05/09 at 03:30 PM ET

As I’m sure all of you New York Ranger fans are aware, forward Markus Naslund officially announced his retirement from the NHL yesterday.
While he wasn’t a bad Ranger (Over 20 goals for the 10th consecutive season), he had certainly slowed a bit and the team needed something like this to happen in order to clear some cap room. It’s too bad that Wade Redden won’t consider doing the same thing as that would give the Blueshirts a lot more room under the cap to sign players that would make an impact.

That was certainly an exciting game last night, wasn’t it? It’s amazing how great games can be when there’s lots of goals (eight combined goals last night) involved, something the New York Rangers are not too familiar with.

Rangers Reading into Game 5
by Patrick Hoffman on 04/24/09 at 11:10 AM ET

Here we are folks - the New York Rangers are one victory away from the knocking the Washington Capitals out of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in five games.
Despite being down three games to one, the Capitals have done everything they can to win hockey games but Blueshirts’ superstar netminder Henrik Lundqvist has stood in their way. Should we expect the same performance from the “King” tonight?

Lundqvist Leads the Blueshirts to 3-1 Series Lead
by Patrick Hoffman on 04/23/09 at 09:30 AM ET

Its been said by hockey pundits and experts that you need goaltending to win in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Case in point: Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers.
Thanks to Lundqvist’s 38 saves last night, the New York Rangers beat the Washington Capitals by a score of 2-1 in Game four to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. He was not only able to stop initial shot attempts, but he was also able to stop rebound attempts and frustrate the likes of Alex Ovechkin (who scored the Caps only goal), Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Mike Green.
Through four games in this series, Lundqvist has stopped an incredible 141 of 149 shots, good enough for a 2.00 goals against average, .946 save percentage and one shutout. Simply put, Lundqvist is the main reason why the Blueshirts are one victory away from eliminating the Capitals in the first round.

Thoughts Heading Into Game 2
by Patrick Hoffman on 04/17/09 at 12:00 PM ET

Tomorrow afternoon at the Verizon Center, the New York Rangers look to go up 2-0 in their first round series against the Washington Capitals.
While the Blueshirts were able to pick up a 4-3 victory in Game one on Wednesday night, there are a few things that the team will most likely look to improve upon:
- Limiting Alex Ovechkin. In Game one, Ovechkin fired 13 shots at Rangers’ netminder Henrik Lundqvist. Luckily, the “King” was on his game.
- Staying out of the box. Markus Naslund was guilty of taking three penalties on Wednesday night. The last thing the Rangers’ want to do is give the Capitals power play time with lethal weapons such as Ovechkin, Mike Green, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, and Sergei Fedorov.
- Face-offs. The Caps’ outclassed the Blueshirts in the face-off circle on Wednesday night. Hopefully, the return of captain Chris Drury will change that.

Tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes is a huge one for the New York Rangers as they look to increase the space between them, the Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers while also shooting for a higher seed in the Eastern Conference.

It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over
by Patrick Hoffman on 04/01/09 at 01:00 PM ET

While the New York Rangers looked like a playoff team on Monday night against the New Jersey Devils, it certainly does not mean that they will make the playoffs as both the Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers continue to make things interesting by winning crucial games down the stretch.
These next two games for the Blueshirts are critical so if they could pick up four points, that would obviously be the optimum but right now, getting three out of possible four points wouldn’t be so bad either.
