Lundqvist Does it Again

Coming into tonight’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, you just knew that it was going to be a tough game for the New York Rangers.
The game lived up to that billing as the Rangers’ were able to come away with a 1-0 shootout win thanks to the shootout winner by team captain Ryan Callahan. However, the main reason the Rangers won tonight’s game was because of the goaltending of Henrik Lundqvist.
Lundqvist made 34 saves in regulation and stopped all but one of the shootout attempts taken by the Sabres in his second straight shutout (6th of the season…tied for first in the league). Simply put, Lundqvist played the way he always has this season for his hockey club.
Had it not been for Lundqvist’s terrific play, this could have just as easily been a shutout for Sabres’ goaltender Ryan Miller. Miller, who won last night over the Montreal Canadiens, was stellar in this game in making 29 saves and giving his team every chance to win a hockey game.

Things Getting Tighter and Tighter for the Blueshirts

Last night’s 3-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres was a game that the New York Rangers had to have. Unfortunately, the team’s inability to finish hurt their chances of doing just that and as result, making things tighter and tighter for them as the team heads down the stretch.
Mats Zuccarello had a chance to tie hockey game with just under two minutes to go when Wojtek Wolski deflected a puck to the slot to Zuccarello. Zuccarello took it in all alone on Sabres’ netminder Ryan Miller only to be stopped by Miller’s glove. Had Zuccarello been able to lift it a bit higher, the game surely would have gone into overtime where anything could have happened.
The Blueshirts had the puck in the slot numerous amount of times in the third period but Miller was either able to make the save or be lucky enough to have one of his defenseman block it or have the Rangers miss the net. All in all, Miller made 29 saves in helping his team get to within three points of the Rangers in the Eastern Conference standings.

Miller Time

It’s pretty easy to say that Mike Richter is the best US-born goaltender of all-time. He won a Stanley Cup, World Cup, Silver Medal, MVP of the 1994 All-Star game, MVP of the Rangers in multiple seasons, etc.
When it came to playing for his country, Richter was a big-game goaltender and tonight, Ryan Miller was just that for the US. He made 42 saves and did everything he could to help get his team three points in the standings. All-in-all, he stood on his head and played like Richter did in 1996/2002 and even a bit like Jim Craig did in 1980.
Yes, I know it was only a preliminary round game but Miller showed to the rest of the world what a great goaltender he is and how he can help the US team surprise a lot of folks in the hockey world.
Keep watching folks…it’s only going to get better.

All Eyes on Miller

Ryan Miller is the biggest reason why the Buffalo Sabres sit in first place in the Northeast Division. In fact, the Sabres are built much like this Team USA—a solid foundation complemented by a collection of players in the proper roles, buttressed by superior goaltending.
Miller also resided among the NHL leaders in wins, shutouts, goals-against average and save percentage.
Simply put, Miller is the game-breaker, at the peak of his career, the Americans need if they want to prove the naysayers wrong that won’t be tabbing this team for medal contention. Plus, Miller is motivated after an injury left him on the outside looking in at Torino. Then, Rick DiPietro, Robert Esche and John Grahame, could do little to save the Americans from an embarrassing eighth-place finish.

Miller, Sabres Struggling

“The big part of it is if you let things start to creep into your head, get uneasy and start to lose confidence as a team. That’s exactly the wrong way to think. You have to believe that what you’re doing is the right thing. You have to trust you have a good system in place.”
Miller has allowed 15 goals during his five-game skid, with a 4.07 goals-against average and .874 save percentage. He still has very solid stats overall, with a 2.15 GAA and .931 save percentage. Miller thinks that he and his teammates just need to roll with the punches and realize that sometimes it’s not as good as it seems and other times it’s not as bad.
“We’ve had some games this year where we haven’t been very good and we’ve won,” Miller said. “And we’ve had a few games in this stretch even where I thought we’ve been really good and haven’t got rewarded for some of our play.”

Will He Actually Play and other Ranger Musings

As Sam Weinman reported in his blog, the New York Rangers have called up defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti in the event that defenseman Michal Rozsival cannot play tonight after suffering a facial injury in last night’s 2-1 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
The question that both Weinman and I are wondering is what does this say about Corey Potter? Potter played with the Blueshirts a few weeks ago and did just fine and yet, when the team is in a bind like they could be tonight, they potentially look to Sanguinetti. Yes, Sanguinetti is an all star in the AHL and leading the Hartford Wolf Pack with 20 points in 39 games, but is he ready to step in against a potentially potent offense in the Ottawa Senators?

If there was a team that the New York Rangers were going to lost, it was last night’s against the Buffalo Sabres. Much like the Rangers, the Sabres were undefeated (2-0), getting timely goal-scoring, playing solid defense and getting excellent play from their goaltender (Ryan Miller).
As such, it should come as no surprise that the Blueshirts lost their first game of the regular season last night to the Sabres by a score of 3-1. The team did not generate many scoring chances and took bad penalties, two things that usually lead to a loss.
