They didn’t call Johnny Wilson “Iron Man” for nothing.
Wilson, a former Ranger, played in 580 consecutive National Hockey League games, eclipsing the record of 508, set by an original Ranger, Murray Murdoch.
Many who knew Wilson—he passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82—mourn his death not merely for what he accomplished in hockey with Toronto, Detroit, Chicago and New York, but for the grand person that he was.

• WORLD’S WHAT? While the misnamed World Championships of hockey go unnoticed along New York’s Broadway, Chicago’s State Street and Hollywood’s Wilshire Boulevard, it gets lots of scrutiny from National Hockey League bird dogs scrutinizing prospects. Glen Sather and John Tortorella have to be pleased with Derek Stepan’s efforts for Team USA. “I didn’t realize how good Stepan was,” observed Team USA—former Islanders—head coach Scott Gordon. “Derek was impressive not just from a point standpoint—seven points in seven games—but his hockey intelligence. He’s the whole package.”
P.S. Don’t be surprised if Gordon re-appears as an NHL head coach. He’s got plenty of admirers among general managers.
• ON DEVILS ISLAND: Evgeni Nabokov’s snubbing of the Islanders during the homestretch may come under the heading “Time is a healer.” Nabby’s big-time agent Donnie Meehan has convinced the vet goalie that it would be more sensible to show up at training camp and be a good (goalie) boy, make some real money and then see what happens. Certainly, there’s a chance that Garth Snow can trade Easy Ev to a goalie-seeking team such as Philadelphia—even Phoenix, if Ilya Bryzgalov goes bye-bye—for a draft choice. (Hey, maybe even nab another Michael Grabner!) If Moose Hedberg does not return to New Jersey, who knows, Lou Lamoriello might get on the blower to Snow.

How the Rangers Can Succeed without Their Heart & Soul Player

Getting the pulse of Rangers fans, The Maven discovers that many believe that the Callahan loss is depressing, but not catastrophic.
Hockey photographer David Perlmutter of New Rochelle offers a compelling suggestion to coach Tortorella.
“Torts must have Callahan sitting on the bench from now to the end of the playoffs,” suggests Perlmutter. “Ryan’s presence will pack an emotional punch after every shift.
“The coach should give Brandon Dubinsky the “A” that Cally wore because Dubie is the most logical candidate. If the Rangers play in the postseason the way they did against Boston, the Cup is a reachable goal.”

The Maven on NHLPA Boss Donald Fehr

The machinations of the NHL Players’ Association is important to every hockey fan who fears another work stoppage like the one that traumatized the game in 2004-2005.
That’s why Donald Fehr’s ascent to the union throne is downright scary.
For one thing, Fehr has absolutely no hockey background and that’s apparent already. For another, he’s as militant as his predecessor—and pal—Bob Goodenow, who forced the lockout in the first place. Had Goodenow prevailed—Trevor Linden, among other players stopped him—the work stoppage would have lasted a second year and who knows what would have happened to the NHL after that.
Determined to make an impression on his macho constituency, Fehr will employ the same our-way-or-no-way tactics as Goodenow.
Perhaps even more alarming is the manner in which Fehr inherited the job previously done so well by Paul Kelly.

Some Tri-State Area Hockey Thoughts From the Maven

If you’re a fan of the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils or New York Islanders, you will want to make sure that you check out my mentor’s, Stan Fischler, recent “Bluelines” column for MSGNetwork.com:
• Brian Leetch played for Boston in only 61 of his 1,205 NHL games but the Rangers icon will represent the Bruins in next Saturday’s outdoor Whale Bowl Game at Hartford’s Rentschler Field. The match pits Whalers Legends against their Bruins counterparts. Hockey nut-actors Michael Keaton and Alan Thicke also will be on hand along with stars of the hockey classic flick, “Mystery Alaska” and its screenwriter David E. Kelley.
• The 1931 hit tune, “Out Of Nowhere,” could be Garth Snow’s theme whenever his “find,” Michael Grabner, takes the ice. The Austrian-born goal machine has emerged as a late – but excellent – Calder Trophy-challenger. “My head and my shot,” explains the Islanders’ ace, “have caught up with my speed!”
• Newsday columnist Arthur Staple says that if he (Staple) was Isles g.m. he’d make sure Evgeni Nabokov never again plays in the NHL. “I blame Nabokov,” writes Staple. “If he wanted to choose his NHL team without needing waivers, he should have taken one of the offers he had in the summer. He’s chosen not to play at all rather than undertake a big challenge. Can’t imagine any team would want him now!”

The Hockey Maven Knows what The Blueshirts Need to Do

Yesterday evening over at the MSG Network web site, the “Hockey Maven”, Stan Fischler, blogged about what the New York Rangers need to do to win some hockey games:
The grit guys, who can score—especially Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky—must ratchet up their games and it wouldn’t hurt if Avery, whose offense IS there, lights a few red lamps. Ditto for Brandon Prust.
The Hockey Maven is absolutely right, especially when it comes to someone like Ryan Callahan. While Callahan is terrific at blocking shots, killing penalties, going into the corners and taking the body, he’d be even better if he could start contributing more offensively.

Good afternoon folks. I figured now would be a good time to get the pulse of Ranger nation and see what you folks think about the following questions I have for ya:
- How much do you think defenseman Marc Staal is worth?
- If you were head coach John Tortorella, what would your lines look like?
- Do you think newcomer Todd White will end up with the big club or with the Hartford Wolf Pack? Why?
- Torts told Stan Fischler that he thinks back-up netminder Martin Biron will get in between 17 and 20 games this season. Do you believe him or do you think he’ll run with Henrik Lundqvist for as many games as possible?

Not that anything too serious should be read into it, but Colton Orr and Aaron Voros accompanied Glen Sather to last week’s Canadian Society annual hockey dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. Does this mean either – or both – will be back with the Blueshirts? Not necessarily. Now that the hated Flyers have Chris (not so Mr. Clean) Pronger, Orr might be the best bully-deterrent on Broadway.
Lou Lamoriello, to the surprise of most, didn’t demand that former head coach Brent Sutter sit out for a season or ask for anything in return from the Flames. Instead, he had this to say: “Once you give consent, because of the new rules in the NHL there is no recourse and no compensation.”Says Lamoriello, “There should be compensation in situations like this for all the obvious reasons, but there isn’t. That’s a league rule and you accept it.”

Thoughts on Canucks’ Game Three Victory

In another short blog I penned for MaxHockey.com, I mentioned how a Versus analyst called the Vancouver Canucks’ play methodic and how the term suited them for tonight’s 3-1 victory, giving the boys from British Columbia a 2-1 series lead heading into Game Four.
