Someone to Follow on Twitter: @SnowdenNHL

As all of you are well aware of, Twitter is a terrific social media outlet for puckheads everywhere.

One such hockey nut who utilizes Twitter on a regular basis is Lee Snowden. Lee was kind enough to take sometime out of his summer schedule to tell us about how he got into hockey, how he got into Tweeting and what he thinks the future of hockey and Twitter are.

PH: How did you get into hockey?
LS: I actually moved to Canada from England when I was about 4 years old. I remember as a youngster my Dad would listen to Peter Maher call the Flames games on the radio, and we would watch the games on channel 2 & 7 in Calgary as they were called by the legend Ed Whalen. I was lucky enough to have my Dad take me to quite a few Flames games as a kid, I was at the Dome in 1994 when Bure knocked us out.

PH: Growing up, who was your favorite team and player? Why?
LS: Obviously, the Flames were my team growing up having lived in Calgary for so long. I didn’t have a favorite player until I was in junior high school when a rookie named Jeremy Roenick burst on the scene in Chicago. I loved his scoring ability and skill as a young player. Then he evolved into the clutch, outspoken player we all now know (and love).

Chatting With Hockey Fans

As most of you know by now, Twitter is a great way to connect with other hockey fans and talk about the sport we all know and love.

One such user on Twitter that really takes that to a whole different level is @NHLFANCHAT. This user has well over 2,000 followers and as the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue on, his numbers will continue to rise.

He was kind enough to take time out of his busy Twitter hockey fan chat schedule to tell us a bit about himself:

PH: How did you get into hockey?
NFC: Hockey has always been an important part of growing up in our household. My father was a huge hockey fan. When I was 4 years old, my dad enrolled me in minor league hockey and immediately made an ice rink in the backyard for me to practice. Besides playing winter hockey, I played in summer hockey leagues and took skating lessons. I was good enough to reach Triple A Major by the age of 14 but stopped playing due to multiple concussions.

As I got older, I started to play organized non-professional to shinny hockey with friends.

Hockey is part of my DNA.

Rangers’ Line-up Update

According to New York Rangers’ web site beat writer Jim Cerny’s Twitter account, Rangers’ back-up goaltender Martin Biron will get the start tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Considering that the Blueshirts have struggled against the Borad Street Bullies this season, starting Biron makes a lot of sense for tonight. He’s been a solid performer for the Rangers this season and it will be interesting to see how he plays against a tough and extremely talented team in the Philadelphia Flyers.

The move also makes sense because starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was constantly under siege last night in the team’s 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Remember, if the team manages to clinch a playoff spot, they will want a rested and healthy Henrik Lundqvist between the pipes and a move like this one helps make that happen.

What are your thoughts folks? Think head coach John Tortorella is making the right move? How do you think Biron will perform against his former club?

The Power of Twitter in Hockey - Be Real

From Paul Kukla at NHL.com:

One thing I had not really grasped until a few days before UFA Day was Twitter.  I really had no time to figure out exactly how it works and what I did know was I would have to filter the hockey news flowing in from Twitter since many people like to tell you what they are doing throughout the day.

I don’t want to know that a hockey fan in Philadelphia is at an ice cream store.  I don’t care that you just took a shower and I really have no need to see a picture of your dog playing dead.

What I want is hockey news as quickly as possible and Twitter does provide that if you know where to look.  It is much quicker to type “Pronger traded to Philly” and post that on Twitter than it is to post it as a news story on one of the reputable hockey Websites or blogs.
