The Hawks played with urgency from the start. So did the Canucks. But eventually, the Canucks decided they didn’t want to pay the price to make a play, or even be the aggressors the way they had in winning the first three games. It’s that mentality that makes people question Vancouver’s Stanley Cup credibility. Winners don’t turtle like that.
-Steve Rosenbloom of the Chicago Tribune, writing about the Blackhawks 7-2 win over the Canucks tonight. Read more from Rosenbloom and I think the words are a little harsh for a team up 3-1 and heading back home.

Does The NHL Want To Lose The Phoenix TV Market?

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,
The Phoenix Coyotes may play their last game in the desert on Wednesday, but there is one big reason why the NHL has fought long and hard to prevent a possible franchise move to Winnipeg: Television.
A survey of several current and former NHL governors – who would not speak on the record because commissioner Gary Bettman frowns on public discussions of league business – highlighted the league’s need to keep the Phoenix market (the 12th-largest in the United States, according to Nielsen Media Research) in order to maximize a U.S. TV contract.
added 10:26pm, from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,
The two warring factions in the desert standoff over the Phoenix Coyotes have agreed to put down their guns and meet, face to face, Thursday.
But that doesn’t mean either side, the City of Glendale and the Goldwater Institute, has altered its position.
“Ours certainly has not,” Goldwater spokesman Dan Guerin told QMI Agency Tuesday.

Needed: More Banners In Colorado

from Adrian Dater of the Denver Post,
Discussing his new job in depth for the first time, Joe Sakic today said he is excited about becoming executive adviser and alternate governor of the Avalanche. Part of his vision for the franchise centers around the rafters of the Pepsi Center.
“We want to see more banners raised,” Sakic said at a new conference this afternoon.
One of Sakic’s first pieces of wisdom he plans to pass along to Avalanche players, who finished next-to-last in the NHL this season: He’s been there.
“I was there when the Quebec Nordiques decided to go in the direction of rebuilding. I know exactly what they’re going to expect. I know as a player when you go through those things it’s tough to get out of it. But I’m very excited to be part of this going forward. We finished 29th, so there’s holes. As a group, starting tomorrow, we’re going to get together with everybody, the whole hockey organization, and we need to figure out where we need to go.”

Bryzgalov UFA Stock May Be Falling

from James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail,
With elimination potentially on the way in tomorrow’s Game 4, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett pointed to his goalie as one area that needs to improve.
“We need our goaltender to have an all-world game,” he said.
If Bryzgalov falls short again, it’ll be interesting to see how free agency plays out. The goalie market is crowded with backup options without many starters to choose from, with the only other free agents that have won more than 20 games this season (Tomas Vokoun and Dwayne Roloson) getting up there in years.
Teams have been going cheaper in goal in recent years, too, which could be an issue.

“Our mindset is just focusing on what we need to do, how we play – play the right way and get ready for Game 4. We have confidence in the league, we have confidence in the officials that they won’t be influenced by all the whining going on here right now.
“We’re staying away from it, and we’re focused on what we need to do. And like I said, we have confidence in the league that this doesn’t affect the series. It’s a pretty good series. Two pretty good teams, going at it pretty hard.”
