Flyers Carcillo Suspended 2 Games Next Season

New York—Philadelphia Flyers’ forward Daniel Carcillo has been suspended for the period covering two regular season games, without pay, for his actions off the ice following the first period of Game #4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Boston Bruins on May 6, the National Hockey League announced today.

National Hockey League Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy reached the decision following a hearing into the matter on May 13. The hearing was conducted pursuant to article 18.1 (on-ice discipline) and 18.2 (off-ice discipline) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, NHL By-Law 17 and Article 6 of the NHL Constitution as a result of an incident outside of the officials’ locker room following the first period and a verbal confrontation with linesman Brian Murphy at the players’ bench prior to the start of the second period.

“Between the first and second period, while off ice and outside the officials’ locker room, Mr. Carcillo engaged in aggressive behavior and inappropriate conduct directed at the officials,” said Murphy. “While Mr. Carcillo acknowledged in the hearing that he regrets his actions outside of the officials’ room, there can be no defense for his conduct.

“I also reviewed the verbal confrontation between Carcillo and linesman Brian Murphy at the players’ bench prior to the start of the second period and have determined that, while the verbal abuse may have been worthy of a penalty, there is no evidence that Carcillo’s action merit supplemental discipline,” concluded Murphy.

Coaches Shouldn’t Over-think Things

From Rory Boylen at The Hockey News:

How valuable a tactic is line matching? In theory, this kind of chess game is supposed to give the home team an advantage since they have the last change and the opportunity to put their shutdown players up against the other team’s top line or their top line against the other team’s fourth unit.

But can you become too committed to this game plan and, in turn, start unintentionally taking ice time away from the players you should be living and dying with?

“Bang on, coaches can over-think things,” one NHL coach said. “At some point your best players have to go out and deal with what’s thrown at them.”

Esposito Doesn’t Give a Damn About the Bruins

From Zuri Berry at Boston.com:

In an interview with Fox 13 Tampa last week, NHL hall of famer Phil Esposito—a member of the Bruins’ 1972 and 1970 Stanley Cup championship teams whose jersey hangs from the rafters at TD Garden—said he “could give one damn about Boston.”

“I don’t care about Boston,” Esposito told the local Fox affiliate. “Tampa Bay is my home. The Lightning are like my child. I gave birth to it. It took everything I had physically and probably mentally.”

The interview video is below:

Friedman’s 30

From Elliotte Friedman of CBC, and his “30 Thoughts” piece:

3) Another thing I’m learning from my twitter feed: there is not an NHL city that hates its team ownership more than Atlanta. Think both Gary Bettman and David Stern agree with those fans, too. It would be nice if a little bit of that $170 US million franchise/relocation fee (assuming a sale to Winnipeg, of course) went to making sure those who lose their jobs receive a decent package/benefits. [...]

6) Daniel blocked a shot late in Game 1 against San Jose and was mercilessly ripped by his teammates. He actually fell and slid into it skate-first. They asked him when he learned to play baseball.[...]

30) I’ll take whatever criticism I get for not jumping to conclusions on the cause of Boogaard’s death. Yes, he had concussion problems. Yes, he was battling some substance issues. But, we don’t know if either was the reason. What’s wrong with waiting to find out for sure?

Comparing Boucher to Tortorella in Tampa

From Gary Shelton at St. Petersburg Times:

Think of Boucher as a surgeon’s scalpel. Think of Tortorella as a Viking’s broadsword. Think of Boucher as your favorite teacher. Think of Tortorella as your grumpy uncle. Think of Boucher playing chess. Think of Tortorella playing with fire.

You know, like that.

None of this is meant to lessen the impact of either coach. Frankly, the world needs diplomats, and it needs trail bosses. When you consider the job Boucher has done this year, and the job that Torts did in his years, Tampa Bay should feel a fondness for both men. At this point, the most fair thing you can say is that Tortorella was the perfect coach for the championship team, and Boucher has been the perfect coach for this one.

“I think there are a lot more similarities than differences,” said Nigel Kirwan, the Lightning’s video coach who worked for both men. “They’re both pretty intense in their desire to win. And when they lose, they’re both men you want to stay away from. Neither one of them likes losing, which is why I think they’ve both been successful.”

No Frat Boys at ESPN

From Michael McCarthy at USA Today:

...executive vice president of content John Skipper blasted the notion that the company’s Bristol, Conn. campus is a hotbed of office romance, behavioral issues and sexual harassment.

“I can tell you categorically: we do not have a frat-boy culture. We do not condone that kind of activity. In fact, we’ve taken lots and lots of steps to create policies. We’re fairly stringent when people do things. We suspend people. We fire people,” Skipper told reporters after the event. “It is clear to everybody who works for us we are not going to tolerate it. It’s just human nature, human behavior…We have a culture of hard work and achievement and serving fans. We have a lot of employees. A few of them, every now and then, do something stupid.”

The network’s NHL analyst Matthew Barnaby has been pulled off the air after being charged with a felony over a domestic incident with his estranged wife in Amherst, N.Y.. Barnaby’s been linked romantically to ESPN colleague Michelle Beadle, who appeared live on stage at the event. He pleaded not guilty to five criminal charges and apologized for the “unfortunate incident” with his soon-to-be ex-wife.

Ron Francis Leaving Canes Bench for Front Office

via TSN:

Hall of Fame player Ron Francis is giving up his position as associate coach of the Carolina Hurricanes to focus on his front-office job with the club.

General manager Jim Rutherford said Tuesday that the mutual decision to shift Francis back into the front office was “something that had been planned” for years and wasn’t in response to the team missing the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons.

Update 12:50pm ET: More from Carolina today.  From Luke DeCock at the Charlotte Observer—

What happens with Jeff Daniels and Rod Brind’Amour in the immediate future remains up in the air—there’s going to be an assistant-coach reshuffle behind the Hurricanes’ bench one way or another, with Ron Francis moving back to the front office full time—but Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford has a lot to say about their coaching futures.

In his end-of-season media briefing Tuesday, Rutherford said he thought both Daniels and Brind’Amour would be head coaches in the NHL at some point.

Two NHL press releases: Bruins recognized for recycling leftovers; B’s-Bolts game may be exciting

The NHL posted two press releases this morning, and one involves actual good news regarding the Boston Bruins’ efforts to send their leftover concessions to Boston area food banks…

On Wednesday, May 11, the Boston Bruins received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Merit Award for their efforts in food waste recovery and prevention.  Since the beginning of the season, the Bruins have collected and donated prepared but untouched food after each home game at TD Garden.

In partnership with Delaware North Companies Sportservice and the Boston Rescue Mission, the Bruins’ food recovery initiative has diverted 6,950 pounds of food waste from landfill while providing the Mission with 5,219 meals. The Bruins’ Rock and Wrap It Up! program captured the front page headline of the January 18, 2011, edition of the Boston Globe and was featured on the “Making a Difference” segment on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams in April.
